Mixed Veterans Pairs 2022

Congratulations to Shirley and Roger Palmer on their win in this years Mixed Veterans Pairs 2022.

Champion of Champions 2022

Last Saturday were the Champion of Champions events for Singles and Novice Singles. Winners of the events from each WA club qualify to play in sectional competition for the chance to progress through to the finals on the Sunday.

Our Men’s Singles Champion, Ross Cunningham, was unable to enter as he is currently away. Our Women’s Singles Champion, Kaye Martin, drew Yokine where a group of Sorrento members went to support and cheer her on. Kaye played some excellent bowls, winning both games in her section comfortably 21-10 and 21-6. She then progressed to play an alignment game that afternoon. Kaye continued her good form, holding the lead throughout the game until the last few ends, when her opponent picked up shots to eventually win 21-19 in a tight, high-standard game.

A second group of supporters were at Rossmoyne where our Men’s Novice, Ian Munro, and Women’s Novice, Jodi Neindorf, were both playing. It was the first time playing at Rossmoyne for both players, Jodi under cover and Ian outside on the quick synthetic surfaces.

Unfortunately, Ian was in a section of just two players, meaning the first game would determine the section winner. Ian got away to a 7-2 lead early but his opponent caught up with the scores 13-13. Ian showed great composure to then draw away and win 17-13. He progressed to the alignment round but had to wait until all the other rinks had completed their sections, taking to the green again more than three hours after finishing his first game. A cross wind and his opponent warmed-up and playing very well made it very difficult for Ian, going down 7-17.

Jodi was also in a section of just two players. Her opponent was playing very confidently and got away to a 10-2 lead. However, Jodi was bowling well and remained calm, consistently having bowls in the head. A couple of strong ends, including a four, narrowed the gap and she was down just 12-15.  Single shots were shared with both players for the next few ends, Jodi going down 13-17 in a very long and high-standard game.

Men’s Triples Championship

The sectional rounds of the Mens Triples, the final club Championship event of the 2022/3 season, were held on Sunday 19th March, under excellent conditions – warm, slightly breezy, and with fast-running greens. A total of 14 teams entered, so it was decided to play three games under a random draw system with eight teams qualifying for the knock-out rounds. The decision to experiment with qualify eight rather than four teams kept interest alive through all three rounds. Indeed, while three teams, skippered by Paul Knight, John Sturk and Ross Cunningham, recorded three wins, the other qualifiers including a team with two wins, one with a win and a draw, and three teams with one win.

The quarter-finals continued on Sunday 26th March under cloudy skies. The teams playing were Knight v Eagles, Sturk v Clarke, Cunningham v Snow and Hulbert v Orton. The quarter finals were all close games, won by Eagles, Hulbert, Sturk and Cunningham.

The semi finals were played after a short lunch break with Hulbert wining over Eagles and Cunningham having a close game before pulling away from Sturk.

The final between Murray Hulbert, Andy Elmer and Peter Flack v Ross Cunningham, Warren Elliott and Paul Ramsey was a very close game until Cunningham’s team pulled away just after the halfway mark of the game to win comfortably.

MegaBowl Champions

The final night of MegaBowl was held last Friday night with a small but loyal turnout. Using the fines collected throughout the season, everyone went home a winner, with those who didn’t place in the final three receiving their money back.

Congratulations to this season’s MegaBowler of the Year Ron Rogers who took home $50, a $20 bar voucher and, more importantly, the coveted trophy. MidiBowler of the Year was Spider with $30, a $20 bar voucher, and a much smaller trophy. This was a step up from last season for Spider and with touchers with every one of his bowls on the night he is surely a threat for next season’s event! Third place and MiniBowler of the Year was Angry Anderson with $20 and the smallest of the trophies. We hope you will all display your trophies with pride at home. A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this fun event, to Kevin Coffey for the great job on the mic every week, to the Club for their support with bar vouchers, and to Wendy Flack and Shelley Jeffs for running the show every Friday night.

See you all again next year!

Men’s Singles Championship

Sectional play of the Men’s Singles Championship commenced on Sunday 19th February with section winners progressing to the second round on Sunday 26th February. Round two games were split over an alignment round in the morning with five games played – M.Hulbert v K. Coffey, B.Fleiser v R. Tozer, P. Appleton v B. Jeffs, D. Dunstan v R .Cunningham and P.Knight v R. Butler with the quarter finals in the afternoon.

All games were played on ‘B’ green in almost perfect conditions with weather and green being ideal, although it did get a little hot in the afternoon. The alignment rounds ended with Paul Knight & Rhett Butler fighting out a very high quality tight game, resulting in a narrow win to Rhett. All other games ended in clear wins to Murray Hulbert, Barney Fleiser, Bob Jeffs and Ross Cunningham.

After a quick lunch break, the quarter finals games were played between Rhett Butler v Murray Hulbert, Ross Cunningham v Bob Jeffs, Jeff Thomson v Andy Elmer and Barney Fleiser v John Sturk. Again Rhett was involved in a very tight game with Murray but finally prevailed to win 25 to 24. Another great game for the spectators to cheer on. Barney and John also had a tight tussle after Barney had snatched a good lead but John fought back well, including saving a match ending score by sending the jack into the ditch. Unfortunately he couldn’t overcome the big lead and went down 25-19. The other two games went to Ross and Andy with some good bowls being played by all participants. Thanks to Peter Flack for jumping in at short notice to mark one of the quarter-final games.

The semi-finals of the Men’s Singles Championship were held on A Green on Sunday 12th March, in perfect weather conditions. In a departure from recent years, the finals were played alongside the Women’s singles finals in order to increase spectator appeal, and some 40-50 people turned up to watch, providing a good atmosphere for the games.

The semi-final between Barney Fleiser and Andy Elmer saw Barney ease out to an early 8-2 lead with some nice draw bowling, before Andy found his line and length to draw level near the half-way mark. The 14th end was the key turning point, when an errant last bowl drive from Barney removed his only bowl from the head leaving Andy to score four. This was quickly followed by a three, and thereafter Andy pulled steadily and confidently away to a 25-11 win.

The second semi followed a strangely similar course, with Rhett Butler establishing a 10-4 lead after 10 ends, before Ross Cunningham started to make inroads with some impressive draw and on-shot bowls. Again the turning point was a quick run by Ross of 3, 4, 4 in what were actually very tight ends to give him a 9-shot lead, and, while Rhett continued to bowl well and peg back the lead, it proved too large with Ross winning 25-20.

The final between Ross and Andy followed a similar course with scores level after 10 ends. Thereafter Andy continued to draw well, particularly when bowling towards the clubhouse end, but Ross produced the key bowl or bowls to pull steadily away to run out the deserved winner at 25-12.

The Match Committee congratulates not only the finalists, but all entries for the sporting conduct displayed in this pinnacle club event. Congratulations too, to the greenkeeper for the quality of the greens provided at the end of a busy summer and the extra traffic from Men’s Country Week – they were a pleasure to play on. Finally, the concept of combining the Men’s and Women’s events proved successful, and we will look to combine club championship finals where possible next season.

Women’s Singles Championship

The Women’s Singles Championship began on Sunday 26th February with sectional play. With 18 players participating, numbers were slightly higher than last year’s 15 entries.

Round 1 commenced at 9.30am in warm conditions and on a perfectly running A Green. This round had some close scores with four of the six sections having a final score difference of four shots or less.

Round 2 followed with the third player of each section playing the loser of Round 1 in each section. Again, there were some very good bowls and tight ends.

Round 3 was played after the lunch break with several spectators watching the round as well as watching the men playing in their Singles knockouts on B Green. All players welcomed the arrival of the sea breeze, making playing conditions more comfortable. Great bowling was witnessed in Round 3 with two sections having to play 26 and 29 ends to decide on a winner.

At the end of play we had six section winners going through to the next round. Section 1 and 2 winners, Kath Harris and Kaye Martin, went straight through to Semi Final 1 with the remaining four section winners – Lee Leach v Liz McTaggart and Liz Marshall v Charmain Harris – playing an alignment round.

On Wednesday 1st March the first game of the alignment round was played between Liz McTaggart and Lee Leach. Liz won the toss and got off to a good start scoring 2 shots on the first end and Lee scored 2 on the next end. The score was equal until the 9th end when Liz found her length and weight and proved to be unstoppable. A combination of concentration and determination saw Liz dominate the scorecard with a final score of 21/8. Congratulations Liz.

The second game of the alignment round was played on Friday 3rd March between Liz Marshall and Charmain Harris. Charmain started well winning the first 2 ends and shared the mat until the 6th end when Charmain pulled out all that was needed to win the next four ends. Then Liz won the mat and dominated for three ends making the score 6-12 after the 13th end. Over the next eight ends both Liz and Charmain won four ends each resulting in a score of 11-18 on the 21st end. Charmain powered ahead and completed the game confidently to the 24th end with a final score of 12-21. Great bowling ladies and congratulations Charmain.

The finals of the Women’s Singles Championship was played in perfect conditions on Sunday 12th March, alongside the Men’s finals and in front of a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd.

In the first semifinal, Kaye Martin dominated the game with brilliant draw bowls and upshots, not giving Kath Harris any opportunity to score. The game continued this way until the 13th end, when Kaye trailed the jack to give Kath her only 2 shots in the game.

In the second semifinal, Liz McTaggart and Charmain Harris had a very close game. With scores even at 14-14 on the 17th end it looked like anyone’s game. However, Charmain pulled away picking up seven shots over the next four ends to win 21-14.

The final between Kaye Martin and Charmain Harris saw Kaye get off to a strong start, picking up seven shots in the first three ends. Charmain won an occasional end with a four on the 13th end keeping her in touch at 8-15. Kaye once again pulled ahead, winning the next three ends to be 19-8 up and looking to be guaranteed the championship. However, Charmain once again knuckled down winning five of the next six ends with just one shot to challenge at 13-21. Kaye’s outstanding draw bowling continued and saw her win the game 25-13.

Pinjarra Mixed Fours

Chris Lander, Paul Knight, Anne Sauerwein and Jennifer Page had an early set off down the freeway last Sunday, the 12th of February 2023 to join bowlers from both Metro and Country areas to celebrate Pinjarra Bowling Clubs, 73rd Anniversary. The club is very proud to showcase their new facilities and greens with a “History” display board in the clubroom which made for an insightful read.

The Mixed Fours event was a format of 3 games of 12 ends. The team played well in the first two games with comprehensive wins over their competitors. As the weather started heating up for the last game of the afternoon the wonderful Pinjarra ladies appeared with refreshing watermelon and frozen icypoles for the bowlers. The final game proved to be an evenly matched battle against a Rossmoyne team. With Chris at the helm, Paul consistently adding to the count and Anne and Jennifer supporting, they managed to hold on and win the day. A team effort, a terrific experience and a happy day!

Women’s Fours Championship

The Women’s Fours Championship began on Wednesday 1st February. The morning started in true summer conditions with a strong easterly wind blowing which thankfully kept the temperature lower than the predicted mid 30s. With eight teams entered, the format of the event was two sections of four teams, playing three rounds of 15 ends with the two section winners to play off in the final. Day one saw the first two rounds played.

In Round 1, the game between Team Everest and Team Van Mosseveld came down to a nail biter. With the score equal on the 14th end Robyn’s team came up with the winning shots with the final score 15-13. Other winning teams in Round 1 were Teams Bourne, Carter and Marsden. All other teams in both sections played well and enjoyed the competition.

Round 2 commenced after the lunch break with playing conditions slightly warmer. Teams Everest, Van Mosseveld, Hyde and Marsden all had a win which leaves the third and final round to decide section winners. That third round will be played on Wednesday 8th February followed by the final over 18 ends.

Wednesday 8th February saw the third and final round of sectional play for the Women’s Fours Championship, followed by the final between the winners of each section. All teams completed the round in close to perfect weather conditions on a beautifully running C green.

Section 1
Demi Konig, Carole Ford, Kaye Martin, Sandy Everest v Anne Sauerwein, Wendy Flack, Shirley Palmer, Charmain Harris. A great game with Team Harris holding the lead until the 7th end when Team Everest went ahead. When Team Harris regained the mat they controlled the rest of the game and won comfortably in the end.

Shelley Jeffs, Kerry Hutchinson, Tracey Newman, Robyn Van Mosseveld v Wendy Saul, Coral Smith, Lee Leach, Pauline Bourne. An interesting game with Team Bourne getting off to a good start, holding a four shot lead on the 5th end. Team Van Mosseveld fought back scoring on the next seven ends. Despite Team Bourne scoring on the final three ends, the gap was too big to bridge, resulting in a win to Team Van Mosseveld 16-12 and a place in the final.

Section 2
Kath Harris, Jennifer Page, Lesley Hughes, Shona Carter v Liz McTaggart, Larraine Brickell, Moira Dean, Glen Larcombe. A great competitive game between these two teams with Team Larcombe leading up to the 8th end until Team Carter’s determination and concentration saw them win five of the next seven ends and take the win.

Liz Marshall, Jan Power-Tuke, Jan Cook, Lorraine Hyde v Robyn Woodward, Jan Paniperis, Cheryl Greig, Pauline Marsden.  Another great game between these two teams with Team Marsden only dropping four ends and winning the round which gained them a place in the final.

Final
Team Marsden v Team Van Mosseveld
Oh what a final!! Team Marsden started well winning 7 of the first 9 ends when the score was 14-4. Team Van Mosseveld came back scoring six shots in the next two ends bringing the score to 14-10. By the 16th end they had taken the lead by two shots. On the 17th end  Team Marsden picked up a five, giving them a 20-17 lead going into the 18th and final end. With great draw bowls being played by the Van Mosseveld team, they picked up a four to win the championship by just one shot, 20-21 with both teams having won 9 ends.

An exciting final to watch and congratulations to all.
Winners: Robyn Van Mosseveld, Tracey Newman, Kerry Hutchinson, Shelley Jeffs
Runners Up: Pauline Marsden, Cheryl Greig, Jan Paniperis, Robyn Woodward

Women’s Novice Championship

The Women’s Novice Championship was held on Sunday 5th February before a large and supportive crowd, with three players challenging for the trophy.

Round 1: Jodi Neindorf v Shonah Buckley. With Jodi leading just 7-6 after the 9th end, the game was promising to be close. However, winning 7 of the next 8 ends saw Jodi with a commanding lead 17-7. The game then turned with Shonah winning 7 of the next 10 ends, pegging back the lead and keeping Jodi on 20 for the last five ends. After a long 28 ends Jodi won the game 21-17.

Round 2: Shonah Buckley v Demi Konig. A very even game with both players winning alternate ends for Shonah to be up only 10-8 on the 9th end. A series of 1s and 2s by Shonah saw the gap widen, with Demi putting in some beautiful bowls but being down at the end 10-21.

Round 3: Demi Konig v Jodi Neindorf. Jodi played a very strong draw game until the 15th end. Demi then played a succession of wonderful drives and up shots to change the momentum of the game. Jodi’s draw game came back and she won the game 21-11.

The results saw Jodi Neindorf become our Women’s Novice Champion with two wins and Shonah Buckley Runner Up. These three young women were amazing competitors, displaying a high level of bowls and outstanding sportsmanship. Match Committee congratulate them and wish them well in their future in bowls.

Australia Day

A total of 63 bowlers registered for this annual event, sponsored by Spraggon and George. Entries were relatively evenly matched between Australia and the Rest of the World, although a couple of of late-nominating Australians were surprised to find themselves reassigned for the afternoon to balance the numbers.

Eight rinks of fours were contested with teams created by Trevor Orton in a delicate balance of abilities and interests. Matches were played over 18 ends on A and C Greens under very pleasant conditions.

In contrast to 2022, when ROW suffered a flogging, this time around the foreigners triumphed by 5 rinks to 3 and 132 shots to 118. The highest winning margin was recorded by Bob Mulroy’s team (playing for ROW in case you could not tell from his accent), followed by Ron Rogers (Australia), while the prizes for best national costume went to Charmaine Harris (ROW) and the Hutchinsons (Aus). The contest was played in very good spirits and the sausage sizzle put on afterwards by Ian Lucas and helpers was greatly appreciated.

Visit our Facebook post here to see all the photos from the day.

Mixed Pairs Championship

The qualifying round of the Club Mixed Pairs Championship was held on Sunday 9th January. Twenty-four pairs entered and the round was conducted on B and D greens as three games of 14 ends, 3×3 bowl format with the best eight teams based on games won and shots up proceeding to the knock-out round. Conditions were excellent for this time of year, with a top temperature of 30 degrees and a light easterly wind in the morning switching to the more normal Sorrento sea breeze in the afternoon. Results varied from some blow-outs to a number of very closely contested games, although (unusually) no draws were recorded. Six pairs won all three games and were joined by two teams with two wins and the highest shots-up.

Quarterfinal pairings were:
W Flack/P Knight v P Bourne/P Flack (for bragging rights in the Flack household)
P Marsden/R Bone v W Saul/M Hulbert (a replay of their final round game won by Marsden/Bone)
D Konig/J Konig v C Harris/T Orton
R Van Mosseveld/S Van Mosseveld v S Everest/D Dunstan

The quarter-finals of the Mixed Pairs Championships were held on the afternoon of Friday 13th. Matches were held on B Green over 14 ends under very blustery conditions and were, bar one exception, very competitive with results being determined on the last end. The winners were Pauline Bourne and Peter Flack, Demi and Jan Konig, Robyn and Stan Van Mosseveld, and Pauline Marsden and Richard Bone.

The Konig pair then played their semi-final against Marsden/Bone with scores tied at 14-all after 17 of the 18 ends. Demi Konig drew a toucher with her first bowl on the last end and this survived as the counting shot despite Richard Bone glancing of the scoring bowl and continuing past the jack. So the Konig pair moved on to the final with their opponents to be determined from the second semi-final to be played the following week.

That last semi-final was played on Friday 20th between Pauline Bourne/Peter Flack and Robyn and Stan Van Mosseveld. The first half of the game was tight with 1s and 2s being collected by both teams with the Van Mosseveld team ahead 8-6 after the 11th end. A subsequent 2 then a damaging 5 gave them the break needed to take the win 16-9 without the 18th end being played.

The final between Van Mossevelds and Demi and Jan Konig was played later that day. Konigs got away to a good start with a four on the 8th end giving them a 12-5 lead and they looked to be well in control of the game. Van Mossevelds then found the outstanding draw bowling they had shown in the semi-final. Winning eight of the next ten ends, including another five, they won the game 21-15, Stan’s first Championship win at Sorrento.

Women’s Triples Championship

Sectional play of the Women’s Triples Championship began on 7th December. The format was 2 bowl triples of 13 ends, with the semi-finals and final to be played over 17 ends. With an entry of ten teams, two sections of three teams and one section of four teams were drawn to give three section winners and the team with next best result overall to go through to the semi-finals.

Section 1 – Team Van Mosseveld had an impressive win in Round 1. Round 2 saw team Hyde start strongly and continue to play well to gain a convincing win. Round 3 to determine the section winner was a close contest all game until team Hyde pulled away with a couple of strong ends to defeat team Van Mosseveld and secure their place in the semi-finals.

Section 2 – Round 1 saw team Bourne and team Power-Tuke even on the 11th end, with team Bourne ahead by just one shot at the end of the 13th end, winning 9-8. Team Power-Tuke went on to win Round 2 in a hard fought game, with team Bourne winning Round 3 for their semi-final return in January.

Section 3 – With four teams in this section, Round 1 proved to be very tight, with team Harris and team Boardman drawing, and team Newman with a narrow win over team Carter 11-8. Round 2 was another very competitive round, with wins to teams Carter and Newman.

Four teams in Section 3 then played their third and final round on Wednesday 11th January.

Kath Harris, Robyn Woodward, Shona Carter v Liz McTaggart, Nerrida Porteous, Pat Boardman.
A very close game with a final result of 10-12. Scores were even going into the last end when team Boardman won the last two shots to declare them the winners.
W. Flack, K. Hutchinson, T. Newman v C. Greig, C. Harris, S. Everest.
Once again a very close game with scores even 9-9 on the 11th end, followed by three shots to team Everest on the 12th end and team Newman scoring 2 shots on the last end to go down 11-12.

The semi-finals were played the following week on Wednesday 18th January in perfect conditions, with some very good bowls being played by all involved.

The first semi-final involved Robyn Van Mossveld, Lee Leach and Shelly Jeffs whose opposition was Tracey Newman, Kerry Hutchinson and Wendy Flack. Robyn’s team got off to a good start leading 8 to zero on the 5th end. Tracey’s team fought back but Robyn’s team bowled steadily and won the game 16-10.

The teams in the other semi-final saw Pauline Bourne as skip, Jan Cook and Coral Smith play against Lorraine Hyde, Wendy Saul and Liz Marshall. This was a fairly evenly matched game until about the 10th end which saw Bourne’s team get a 4. On the 13th end the score was 11-10 in Pauline’s favour. A few good ends after that saw Pauline’s team surge ahead to win by a good margin of 21-10.

The final after lunch was held between Robyn Van Mosseveld’s team and Pauline Bourne’s team. A good close game and the scores were pretty even up to the 8th end. Bourne’s team moved ahead with a 4 and then a 3, giving them a lead of 14-6. Robyn’s team fought back and put another 3 points on their score, but unfortunately it was not their day and the congratulations went to Pauline’s team who went on to win 20-9. Well done to Pauline, Jan and Coral on winning the Women’s Triples Championship.
