Cambridge Daft Doubles

Wendy Price and Janice Davidson played in the final at Cambridge Croquet Club’s Daft Doubles competition on Sunday and what a match!

Janice played an in-off unexpectedly and won the hoop and the game. Prior to making the final, Wendy and Janice played against fellow Sorrento players Jan and Terry Craddock which was a very close game.

Thank you to Cambridge Croquet Club for hosting. Although a bit hot, everyone enjoyed the competition.

English Visitors

Our Croquet members had a nice surprise last Thursday morning when they welcomed two couples visiting from England who joined them to play croquet.

Clare and Paul are members of a club in central England and used their skills and experience to play some challenging games. Though Chris and Joanne hadn’t played before both showed they were naturals. Refreshment and a chat concluded a lovely morning. Thanks guys for coming down.

Croquet CC Singles

Smiles on the faces of Di McGivern, Terry Craddock and Jan Craddock after playing in the CC Singles Competition held at Belmont last weekend.

Winner of the event was Brett McHardy, with Peter Hamilton Runner Up. Well done to all!

Croquet Christmas Luncheon

On Sunday, our Croquet members enjoyed a Christmas luncheon at the club. Current members were joined by their partners and past members.

The day was filled with lots of fun and some impressive dance moves! The throwing/rolling of a gold coin into a bottle of whiskey was won by Terry Craddock.

For all photos from the day, visit our Facebook page here.

Busselton Spring Tournament

Terry and Jan Craddock enjoyed a beautiful weekend at the Busselton Spring Tournament. The competition saw them play at both Busselton and Dunsborough and they both did very well, ranking 4th in their block.

A lovely dinner was enjoyed on Saturday evening with other Croquet members at the Geographe Bay Yacht Club .

Croquet Sisters

Sisters Janice Davidson and Wendy Price played against some of WA’s top players in the Vic Park Flexi’s Doubles held at Higgins Park on the weekend of 12th and 13th November.

They did very well finishing in 7th place, learning so much from the experience!

Croquet at Hyden

Some of our Croquet players travelled to Hyden recently for a fun weekend of croquet and sightseeing.

It was strange weather, with most days sunny but also a day of hail!

Congratulations to Sorrento member Wendy Price, along with partner John Jury from Moorabinda Croquet Club, who were Runners Up in the competition.

Opening Day 2022

On Sunday 18th September, the club’s Opening Day was held, and around 80 members attended for the customary welcome, lunch and bowls.

Before Opening Day proceedings got under way, a presentation was made to Dan Nicholls, the 2021-22 Men’s Bowler-of-the Year, as he had not been presented previously.
Short welcome words were delivered by our President, Barry Bradshaw and by Deputy Mayor, Councillor Christine Hamilton-Prime (deputising for our patron, the Mayor Albert Jacob who was unable to attend)
.
The weather was fine and sunny and the Deputy Mayor, the President and Councillor Russell Fishwick delivered the ceremonial “first bowl” of the season and struck the first croquet ball, witnessed by the members assembled.
Lunch was then served, and was much appreciated. Thanks to W.A SPITROAST for their food and staff.

Sixty-four bowlers then took to the greens in the annual Des Bennett Memorial Trophy, contested by mixed teams skippered by women and by men. The men emerged victorious by 147 (5½ Wins) shots to 133 (2½ Wins). The best-performed men’s team was the team of Di Cox, Larry Perry, Kerry Hutchinson and Peter Flack and the best-performed women’s team was Ron Taylor, Tracey Newman, Ron Hutchinson and Lee Leach.
The raffle was drawn with the major prize of a set of bowls won by Warren Smith, a social member of our club. The Aero Bowls Bag was won by D. Cox. K. Coffey and G. Sarich both won a new pair of bowls shoes. The final prize which was a hamper was won by J. Power-Tuke.

Thanks to Charmain Harris, Shona Carter and Peter Flack for their assistance in putting the day together, and to the small army of assistants from both croquet and bowls that helped on the day.

Croquet Presentation Day

Sorrento Croquet Club held their Trophy Presentation Day recently at the Club, where awards were presented to our winning members.

Winners pictured above (L-R) were:

Terry Craddock (GC Doubles), Jan Craddock (GC Singles, GC Doubles, Club Champion), Kerry Bomford (Member of the Year), Steve West (Most Improved), Wendy Price (Novice Star). Micy Lewis (pictured below) shared the Most Improved award with Steve, but was unwell on the day and could not attend the function.

Congratulations to all our winners!

Croquet Novice Star

Last week the Sorrento Croquet Club held its annual Novice Star Competition.

A rainy start to the day, but the weather turned perfect for our competitors during the day. Congratulations to this year’s winner Wendy Price (pictured on the right) and to Runner Up Margaret Windle (left).

Croquet Lunch

Last Friday was the first quarterly social lunch for the year for our Croquet members. These occasions give members the opportunity to interact with members (past members and some partners) with whom they do not usually play.

Lunch was at the Kingsley Tavern where Covid rules required that the tables be split. However a few drinks, lots of chatting supplemented by a lovely meal, made for great comradeship.

Croquet in Bunbury

On the long weekend, three of our players – Jenny Wilmot, Cheryl Saul and Di McGivern – travelled down to Bunbury to compete in a GC tournament at Bunbury Central Croquet Club.

Congratulations to Di McGivern who partnered with Walter Reid from Albany Croquet Club and came second in the event.

A fabulous weekend with a well run tournament, enjoyed by all.
