St Ives Cup at Cambridge Bowling Club

Congratulations to Jan Konig, Matt Sharrett, Gary Bayne and Barney Fleiser who finished third in a strong field at the St Ives Cup, held over the weekend at Cambridge Bowling Club.

PBA Mandurah

Seven Sorrento Bowlers, J.J Landman, Jan Konig, Kerry Hutchinson, Anne Sauerwein, Adrian Rose, Drew Daley and Matt Sharrett made the trip to Mandurah over two weekends in an attempt to qualify for a place at the Scottish or World Singles and the World Pairs.

The event was very well run by Dave Rankin who should be commended for all the work he does, not only with this tournament, but also the score updates at most events through his Perth Pennants Facebook Page.

Some good bowls were played by everyone but unfortunately nobody qualified from Sorrento on this occasion.

AO Disability Events

On Sunday 18th June, four of our members were involved in the disability events at the Australian Open on the Gold Coast.

Matt Sharrett and Wendy Flack were directors in the Vision Impaired event for twins, Mark and Ross, in their respective singles games. As a director, Mat and Wendy were on the green with the bowler, involved in every aspect of play except actually delivering the bowls. Mark is a good bowler, and Matt’s role was to read the head, call the shots, describe the position of bowls, and let Mark know the adjustments needed to correct. For Ross it was his first ever game of singles, so Wendy was there to guide and support, keep up his confidence, and advise on making corrections to draw rather than shot play. Both players did very well, coming up against current Australian and World Champions.

On the same day, JJ Landman and Bruce Eagles were markers for singles games in the Multi Disability Open Men’s Singles event. Players qualify for this event with any physical disability that affects movement, usually due to birth defects, diseases, surgery or injury. In particular, JJ and Bruce took a liking to Paul, a Victorian bowler with cerebral palsy. In his final sectional game, Paul came up against a New Zealander with the winner going through to knockouts. The game didn’t go Paul’s way on this occasion, going down 20-21 in a spectacular display of top bowls by both players. Given Paul’s inability to control his body movements, his delivery was absolute perfection, every time. Aside from the fine bowling, the game possessed a level of sportsmanship and pure joy in the game that brought tears to many eyes.

Later, while sitting around having a drink and reflecting on the day, all four Sorrento members agreed it had been an emotional and fulfilling day and left with a great deal of admiration and respect for all the players.

Australian Open

Seven Sorrento members, Bruce Eagles, Peter and Wendy Flack, Lee Leach, J.J Landman, Anne Sauerwein and Matt Sharrett, left the cold wintery weather in Perth and headed East to the Gold Coast where magnificent weather and Bowling conditions awaited.

Upon arriving on the Friday before the Open commenced, Bruce, J.J and Matt made their way to the amazing Broadbeach Bowling club for a roll up but found the greens were unfortunately closed but the club house packed to rafters with bowlers from everywhere. We were immediately found by our New Zealand teammate Kerry McNulty who was bigger the J.J and quickly nicknamed “Tiny”. After a nice meal and a few quiet ones, we headed back to our rooms to get a good night’s sleep before J.J played his sectional in the singles.

The following morning J.J headed off to the magnificent Musgrave Hill Bowling club where he played well but was unfortunately unsuccessful in getting through his section. During the day, Tiny had started calling him “Skinny” and that stuck for the rest of the fortnight. Peter and Wendy arrived in the afternoon.

The Sunday saw Bruce head off to Southport Bowling Club while Matt and “Tiny” played their sectional at Club Helensvale.  Bruce had a very tough draw playing a Queensland State player Chris Monk. He won two of his matches but lost a close game vs Chris and failed to progress. Similar results for Kerry who won two and lost one and Matt who lost two and won one.

Anne arrived Monday evening after a medical emergency caused her plane to be diverted to Adelaide and then fly onto Brisbane. Wendy and her partner Tracey Clements played their section of the Women’s Pairs at Coolangatta. They had a very tough draw and failed to progress after scoring one good win.

Tuesday saw Bruce and Matt play their section of the Men’s Pairs at Tugun Bowls Club while Skinny and Tiny played their section and Broadbeach. J.J and Kerry managed a Win, a Draw and a Loss. Bruce and Matt went through their group undefeated and progressed to the knockout section to be played the following week.

Wednesday saw Lee play her section of the Women’s Singles at Mudgeeraba. Lee played excellent bowls and narrowly missed out on progressing but defeated the section winner and a Hong Kong International player on the way.

Thursday was the start of the Ladies Singles for Anne who played her section at Helensvale and Wendy at Broadbeach. The Men’s Fours also began. Bruce, Matt, Kerry and J.J playing at Broadbeach and Peter playing in a composite team at Mudgeeraba. Unfortunately, nobody progressed past their sections. Wendy however was a different story. She continued the great form that she has displayed throughout this year, progressing through her section by playing some terrific bowls and making it too week two and the knockout section of the draw. In the knockout Wendy won her first game very convincingly before she came up against a red-hot Laura Butler from Manning. She played well but couldn’t get over the line. Congratulations to Laura on her wonderful Tournament.

On Friday Anne, playing in a composite team consisting of a Victorian and two Kiwi sisters headed to Coolangatta for their section of the Ladies Four’s. The team played excellent bowls winning two of the games and going down on the last bowl of the final game. It was good enough though and they progressed to the knockout section. Wendy and Lee also played their section at Coolangatta as part of a composite W.A team but didn’t progress after some tight matches.

The following Monday, Peter Flack and Jim Newton from Leeming played at Mudgeeraba in the over 60’s Men’s Pairs and progressed to the knockout stage. They were unlucky to draw Robina for the knockout round as it was running very slowly and didn’t progress any further. Anne played her Ladies Four’s knockout game at Broadbeach but went down in a very close match. Bruce and Matt also played their knockout game of the Men’s Pairs at Broadbeach but went down after some inconsistent bowling.

The next day Lee teamed with Maggie Newton to play the over 60’s Ladies Pairs at Mudgeeraba while Anne and Jenny Kenyon from NSW played their matches at Coolangatta. Both teams played well but failed to progress.

Geraldton Long Weekend Carnival

Six Bowlers from Sorrento, Paul Knight, Barney Fleiser, Bruce Eagles, Jan Konig, JJ Landman and Matt Sharrett made the journey North to Geraldton to take part in the 77th Annual Long Weekend Carnival which was attended by 36 teams from clubs around W.A.

The carnival ran over 3 days and involved two games of fours over 16 ends and one game of split pairs over 8 ends each day.

After day one Bruce’s team of Matt, JJ and Jan found themselves in 4th position recording three victories and Paul and Barney’s composite team down the ladder and losing two close games.

Day two saw Bruce’s team once again go through the day undefeated and finishing the day on top of the standing while Paul’s team fell from contention after another close loss.

Day three was playing in 40 to 50km per hour winds reaching much with showers through out the day and gusts of wind of much higher speed creating havoc. Bruce’s team won all three games and finished the carnival as the only unbeaten team.

Geraldton Bowling Club should be complimented on the way the event was run as it was very well organised and the food supplied each day delicious. This is a carnival well worth attending.

Womens Dash 4 Cash

This very successful event was held in ideal conditions, although rain was predicted. We had a total of 36 teams = 144 players. All players were greeted on arrival and after the registering process was completed they were treated to a delicious morning tea organised by our members.

Teams participating were from as far South as Mandurah and Safety and East from Thornlie/Gosnells and North from Gin Gin and Yanchep and several teams within the radius.

The format was 4 games of 8 ends – two games played before lunch and 2 games after lunch which involved a change of green.

Players returned to the clubrooms after Round 2 for lunch, which was a variety of several delicious soups with a fresh bread rolled followed by a drumstick for dessert. Lunch was served with a smile by a team of male bowlers who did a great job and also did well with the cleaning up that followed. Special thanks to the Men’s Captain – Peter Flack for organising the team of helpers.

Our Vice Captain (Shona Carter) organized several raffles, which included a food hamper, wine raffle, money sheets and a bowls bag, kindly donated from Bowls World who had a pop-up shop which proved popular as always.

Fortunately, the weather held off and all rounds were completed in good sportsmanship. All the results were recorded and calculated by our valued Men’s Match Captain – Dan Greig – a big thank you for all his hard work on the day. His expertise, calm and diligent nature certainly made our Women’s Match Committees’ day a lot less stressful. Barry Bradshaw from Safeway Security Screens who was our sponsor was present at the end of the day to express his thanks to all on behalf of the Club. Generous prize money was presented to the Winning Team from North Beach, Runner Ups from Bayswater and 3 Place from Morley. There were also prizes for each round winner as well as a morning and afternoon winners.

We had 30 players adding up to 10 teams.

Round 1 saw several close games as well as a draw and Team Leach having a convincing win.  After lunch round two was played and once again there was a draw mixed in with some close games. At the end of an enjoyable day the winners were.

Following the completion of Club Championship events last week, Peter Flack and Robyn Van Mosseveld have been awarded the Men’s and Women’s Bowler of the Year respectively. The award is based on a points system over six events – Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours for each gender, along with Mixed Pairs and Mixed Fours.

Congratulations to both Peter and Robyn on an outstanding season in Championship events.

Men’s Veteran Singles

Nineteen ageing bowlers assembled for the sectional phase of the Sorrento Veteran Men’s Singles on Friday 28th, under sunny skies and nearly windless conditions.

Play took place on A and E greens that were running surprisingly well given the cool damp weather of the previous few days.  On completion of play, eight bowlers progressed to the finals to be held starting at 10am on Friday 5th May.

Quarter-final match-ups are as follows: Barry Stewart v Roger Palmer, John Sturk v Dan Greig, Stan van Mosseveld v Allan Davis, and Tony Sabatino v Brian Saul.

The finals of the Veteran Men’s Singles took place on E Green on Friday 5th May.  The green was running well, but strong easterly winds made for difficult playing conditions and lots of debris blowing onto the green.

The quarter-finals were won by Barry Stewart, Dan Greig and Stan Van Mosseveld, while Brian Saul progressed through a walkover from Tony Sabatino.

Semi-finals saw Dan Greig defeat Barry Stewart and Stan Van Mosseveld defeat Brian Saul by comfortable margins, while the final saw Stan drawing consistently to win easily over Dan to retain his Veteran’s title.
