Gala Day

The Sorrento Ladies’ Annual Gala Day was a huge success last Friday with 30 teams competing on the day. The howling winds and drop in temperature in the afternoon made it challenging for players, but at least it wasn’t 39 degrees!!

The hampers and wine bottle raffles, along with money sheeets and book stall raised a fantastic profit of $1900 to add to the entry profits. Thank you to all our pennant ladies and social contributions for making this happen. Wendy Saul and her helpers did an outstanding job with lunch and nibbles. A very big thank you to Peter Flack and Colin Jasper who came to do the dishes, you are most welcome to join our section any time. The presentation of the tables was unique with special table cloths, gifts of honey and bundles of lollies.
Congratulations to:
Winners: Shaan Saunders, Deb Saunders, Lily Rughoobur, Lyn Moffat (Composite)
Runners Up: Lisa Brannan, Marg Booth, Kerry Carey, Trish Hall (Composite)
AM Winners: Klaire Hughes, Nikki Athienides, Gail Davies, Angela Loran (Composite)
PM Winners: Janet Cocks, Wendy Robertson, Lisa Gannon, Marie Lumsden (North Beach)

The day was a great success and thank you to all helpers.

Men’s Pairs Championship

A total of 24 pairs took part in the Qualification Rounds of the Men’s Pairs Championship on Sunday 4th December. Each team played three games of 14 ends against other teams drawn at random, with the top eight teams based on wins and shots-up progressing to knock-out finals the following week. Play took place on B and C greens, both of which were running well, while the weather was warm with SE to SW breezes. Given the 2x2x2x2 format, play extended throughout the day with the last pairs leaving the green about 5:30pm.

Only three pairs won all three matches (Palmer/Hanna, Rogers/Gray and Butler/Tan) while Cunningham/Morgan came through with two wins and a draw. The remaining qualifiers with two wins and shots-up were Martin/Linford, Konig/Odell, Webb/McCarthy and Flack/Daley, all on a countback from four other teams.

The quarter- and semi-finals of the Men’s Pairs championships were both played over 18 ends on B Green on Sunday 11th December under sunny skies and a lightish SE wind which started to fluctuate and strengthen from about noon, switching between SSE and SSW from time to time. Two quarterfinals saw the Flack/Daley and Morgan/Cunningham pairs through very comfortably, with their respective opponents Hanna/Palmer and Linford/Martin unable to gain any real foothold. The other quarterfinals were more closely competitive with Odell/Konig coming through with a four on the second last end to triumph over Tan/Butler 19-15 while Gray/Rogers pulled away from Webb/McCarthy (after being level on 10 ends) to win 19-13.

The semi-finals were high quality contests played under more difficult conditions. The first match saw the Premier Division pairing of Flack/Daley against Morgan/Cunningham, with the former moving ahead to a lead of 11-4 after 10 ends, before Morgan/Cunningham hit their straps with a combination of drawing and on-shots to level at 12-all after 15 ends. The final next two ends saw a three to Flack/Daley followed by a two to Morgan /Cunningham, before Flack produced two great draw shots just behind the jack which Cunningham was unable to dislodge, the final margin being 17-14. The second semi was close, too, being 13-11 to Odell/Konig after 16 ends, but three shots on a long end into the wind on the 17th, where Rogers failed to connect with drives through traffic on his last two bowls, saw Odell/Konig through, the final score being 16-12.

The final of the Championship was played on the morning of Sunday 18th December between Peter Flack/Drew Daley and Neville Odell/Jan Konig, before a small number of spectators. Conditions were good, with B green running at a decent speed under warm, sunny skies and a generally steady easterly which dropped off towards the end.

Unfortunately, Odell and Konig were unable to produce their form of earlier rounds and succumbed to the pressure exerted by their opposition from the start. Team Daley used long ends when they had the jack, with Peter Flack’s lead bowls being pretty much on the money throughout. The match was called after 16 ends with Flack/Daley leading 27-5.

Joe Stow Charity Day

State Women’s Over 60s Triples

Mixed Fours Championship

The first round of the Club Mixed Fours Championship was conducted on Sunday 20th November with 48 participants. The teams were made up of a good cross section of bowlers from the Club with some very experienced players matched against an enthusiastic group of newer bowlers and those keen to provide strong competition in this popular event.

Twelve teams were randomly selected into three groups, playing a sectional format of three games apiece over the course of the day, with the winners from each group and one lucky loser to go through to the semi finals the following Sunday.

After the first round of matches before the lunch break, there were three games decided by two shots or less and the first group with skips Dan Greig, Brian Saul, Derek Boardman and Stan Brickell was shaping up to be a very close run affair. As the afternoon games progressed, the second round results started to show a couple of strong wins in groups two and three, with Paul Knight’s and Murray Hulbert’s teams both having two strong rounds. The first group continued with close results indicating a tight finish for the third and final round of matches.

The third round of matches consolidated the positions for the second and third groups with Paul and Murray’s teams running out winners of their respective groups with three wins each. The first group finished with a tight result going Brian Saul’s way with two wins and a shots up advantage over Derek Boardman’s team. The final team to make up the semi final foursome was the Bruce Eagles lead side who had two wins with 30 shots up.

The finals of the Mixed Fours Championship were played on Sunday 27th November on a fast-running ‘B’ green under excellent competitive bowling conditions of mild temperatures and moderate winds although the sea breeze picked up in the afternoon.

The first semi-final between teams skipped by Murray Hulbert (with Peter Flack, Pauline Bourne and Wendy Flack) and Brian Saul (with Nerrida Porteous, Ross Porteous and Jan Power-Tuke) saw the Hulbert team gain control almost immediately and move slowly but steadily away, with the Saul team limited to single shots only. Ultimately, this game was called after 17 ends with Hulbert leading 16-7.

By contrast, the second semi between the Eagles team (Bruce Eagles, Greg Taylor, Kerry Hutchinson, Coral Smith) and Knight team (Paul Knight, Tracey Newman, Shelley Jeffs, Bob Jeffs) was a very closely contested and slightly higher scoring affair which was tied at 14-all after 16 ends. On the 17th end, team Knight picked up 2 shots and were looking comfortable winners on the 18th end. However, with his last bowl Bruce drove and converted it to two shots for his team, the scores 16-16 and forcing an extra end for a result. In the 19th and final end, with the final bowl Paul picked up the jack and moved it back to a Knight team bowl, earning one shot and their place in the final.

The final between the Hulbert and Knight teams didn’t get underway until after 2pm, by which time the wind had picked up and, along with the quick green, proved a challenge for both teams.

The first eight ends saw the score at 8-4 and the game appeared to be shaping up as a close affair. A five by Hulbert’s team on the ninth put them 13-4 up and it seemed they were taking control of the game. However, the next seven ends had team Knight scoring five singles and a two, along with a drawn end between three bowls where the umpire couldn’t determine a winner! The fightback to be down only 13-11 was largely due to the outstanding driving and cold draws of skip Paul Knight. Team Hulbert then settled, picking up two singles on the final two ends to win the game 15-11.

Women’s Pairs Championship

Wednesday 16th November was the first day of the Women’s Pairs Championship with 14 teams entered, allowing us to run the event in four sections. Sections 1 & 2 had four teams playing three games each and Sections 3 & 4 with three teams, each having a bye and playing two games.

Round 1 saw four very close games finishing within 1 or 2 shots. Round 2 we saw a draw in Section 2 and several competitive bowls delivered in this round. Round 3 was completed in the afternoon resulting in four winning teams overall.

The semi-finals played the following week on Wednesday 23rd November saw Pauline Bourne and Robyn Van Mosseveld playing Shona Carter and Cheryl Greig. A close contest saw Pauline and Robyn win this game 19-16.

In the other semi-final Charmain Harris and Kath Harris played Kerry Hutchinson and Shelley Jeffs – with the Harris combination playing a strong game to come out winners at 26-13.

The final was then between Pauline & Robyn against Kath & Charmain. Pauline and Robyn got away to a good start and were 11-1 on the 5th end. At the 12th end the game was level at 13 all. The following ends displayed great bowls from both sides with Charmain & Kath chipping away and winning four consecutive ends to gain a lead of 18-13. Pauline & Robyn fought back and it was virtually down to the wire with Charmain & Kath two shots up going into the last end.

A nail biting finish saw Charmain deliver her last bowl, under pressure, to come in and gain the shot, giving Kath & Charmain a 3 shot victory and a Championship win, Charmain’s first at Sorrento.

Men’s Fours Championship

The qualifying round of the Men’s Fours Championships was held on Sunday November 6th.  A field of 14 teams entered the competition, so a blind draw was held with each team playing three matches of 14 ends against teams chosen at random, with the top four teams moving on to the finals to be held over 18 ends on Sunday 13th November.  Despite minor overnight rain, the greens were running well, if slightly slower than for pennants the day before, and the sea breeze picked up a bit in the afternoon which provided variation over the day.  Only the Orton team (Orton, Sabatino, Tompkins and Odell) won all three games, with the other three qualifying teams determined on shots-up, these being skippered by Hulbert, Butler and Mulroy.

The finals were held the following Sunday 13th November over 18 ends on ‘B’ Greeen, in fine but cool conditions with the sea breeze picking up before midday.

The first semi-final was contested between teams skipped by Trevor Orton (Neville Odell, Keith Tompkins, Tony Sabatino, Trevor Orton) and Bob Mulroy (Phil Bilich, Alan Jacks, Lindsay Baker, Bob Mulroy). This was a see-saw affair which saw Orton start with a four, but the scores level after 8 ends at 8-all and again after 16 ends at 14-all. A three to Mulroy on the 17th end when the jack was moved away from the head proved decisive and Mulroy held on to prevail 17-15.

Scores in the second semi-final between Murray Hulbert (Peter Morgan, Peter Flack. Alan Walton, Murray Hulbert) and Rhett Butler (Willy Tan, Brian Keily, Peter Snow, Rhett Butler) were always in favour of Hulbert, although Butler drew within three at 12-15 after 13 ends. Thereafter, Hulbert was able to keep Butler at bay and, although overall ends were tied at 9 apiece, Hulbert ran out the winner at 19-15.

The final saw Mulroy’s team playing fine bowls when it counted over the first 6 ends to pull ahead 9-3, but they conceded 15 shots over the next four ends to hand control to the much steadier Hulbert team and ultimately the match was called after 17 ends 26-12 to Hulbert. The match was played in good spirits, in front of a disappointingly small audience of four or five hardy souls braving the southwesterly breeze. The names of Murray Hulbert, Peter Morgan and Alan (Dreds) Walton will be added to the honour board for the third time, Peter Flack replacing Colin Jasper from previous winning teams.

Over 60’s Women’s State Pairs

A large contingent of Sorrento ladies enter this year’s State Over 60s Women’s Pairs, with sectional play on Wednesday 9th November at Rossmoyne, Thornlie and Leeming.

Congratulations to Jan Cook and Liz Marshall, Charmain Harris and Robyn Woodward, Shona Carter and Cheryl Greig, who all won their sections on day one.
Unfortunately, Charmain and Robyn played Jan and Liz in the first knockout the following day at Rossmoyne, so one of the Sorrento teams had to depart and on this occasion it was Charmain and Robyn.

Shona and Cheryl bowed out in the first knockout round too, with a valiant 2 shot loss against the eventual Runners Up.

Congratulations to Jan Cook and Liz Marshall for making the quarter finals in the event.

Saturday 3 Blue

Last Saturday, Chair of Women’s Selection Jan Cook had the pleasure and opportunity to watch 3 Blue play at Inglewood. Both rinks skippered by Sue Delevale and Lee Leach put on a top display of bowls, and spectators could have been watching a top Division at work such were the bowls played.

It was pleasing to see Shonah Buckley playing her first game of bowls with such thought and concentration and ably backed up by Anne Sauerwein and Liz McTaggart. With these three leading off Lee was having the most relaxing day of her bowling career. Not to be out done, Sue’s team were on fire with Mary Cressey sitting her bowls on or near the Jack. If she missed, Betty Stern was there to back her up with Larraine Brickell putting in some screamers followed by Sue when needed. The final score was 59-17.

Congratulations ladies on a top game of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the future for Sorrento is looking good.

Ladies at Leeming

Fourteen Sorrento ladies took the freeway to Leeming Bowling Club last Friday for their second annual Skins Day. Our three teams and a composite joined 26 other teams and played three games, enjoyed a great lunch, bought plenty of raffle tickets, and won money in this unique event guaranteeing prize money for every team entered. Lots of fun had and a great experience for four of our newer bowlers.

Men’s State Fours Champions

The 2022-2023 Dyenamic WA Men’s State Fours had a field of 96 teams take part this season with the final taking part at the Manning Bowling Club on the afternoon of Sunday October 30th.

In the Semi-Finals, the Sorrento team of Bruce Eagles, Murray Hulbert, Peter Flack, and Peter Morgan had a strong win over the Composite team skipped by Segan Pasalich (Osborne Park), Shane Loftus (Osborne Park), Andrew Pasalich (Osborne Park), and Sean Niven (Joondalup) 20-10.

The other Semi-Final saw a solid win for South Perth’s Justin Opie, Glenn Pauling, Troy Kinane and Scott Walker over Doubleview’s Kyle Mcilroy, Stewart Gosstray, Steve Cerff and Gavin Faulkner 18-11.

The Final was played under a series of different weather conditions with both wind and no wind at different times and sunshine and light rain also alternating through the game. The Bruce Eagles team started well by winning the first two ends to go up 3-0 with Justin Opie drawing level on the third end with a three.

Again, Eagles won two ends in a row and surged to a good-sized lead 11-3 by getting fours on both occasions. Opie again answered by grabbing a four of their own followed by a three to close the gap to a single shot of 10-11 after seven ends of the eighteen-end game.

At the halfway mark of the match, the Eagles team was leading 14-10 and were starting to gain the ascendence with more consistent bowls in the head. A two to Opie on the tenth end saw him close within two shots of Eagles at 12-14 but it was the start of the end for the South Perth team.

Three singles in a row followed by two, one, one and two saw Eagles win seven ends in a row and take a 23-12 win with an end to spare. Bruce Eagles, Murray Hulbert, Peter Flack, and Peter Morgan led from start to finish only being level on the third end to earn the 2022-23 Dyenamic WA State Fours Championship.

A huge congratulation to Bruce Eagles, Murray Hulbert, Peter Flack and Peter Morgan – the club is extremely proud of your very fine achievement.

Men’s 2nd Division & Under Singles

The annual club event held on Sunday 16th October attracted a field of 29 players and was the first day of sectional play to determine the final eight players to participate in the finals on Sunday 23rd October. The weather was fine and fresh and improved as the day went on. As usual the greens were prepared to a high standard and provided some challenging conditions for the bowlers.

With nine groups of three players in each section and one group of two players, the initial play was very competitive and while there were some familiar names in the eventual sectional winners, there were some very close games. Due to the numbers starting, an alignment round was required which meant a long day for four players so thanks to those guys who finished up later than expected.

The final eight winners were Keith Tompkins, Bob Mulroy, Peter Appleton, Neville Odell, Trevor Orton, Barney Fleiser, Derek Boardman and Gary Bayne.

The quarter finals were then played on Sunday 23rd October with Keith Tompkins v Peter Appleton, Barney Fleiser v Derek Boardman, Gary Bayne v Bob Mulroy, and Neville Odell v Trevor Orton.

There were a couple of very close games with Bob Mulroy going down to Gary Bayne by a couple of shots and Peter Appleton also going down by a similar margin. Unfortunately, rain intervened and the semis and final needed to be rolled over to the following Sunday 30th October.

The final four competitors, Barney Fleiser, Gary Bayne, Keith Tompkins and Neville Odell gathered at 9:30am on a very cold and blustery morning on the 30th to decide the winner of this very keenly contested event. While the green was well prepared as usual, the weather conditions made for some very challenging bowls on the day.

The first game of the semi final between Keith Tompkins and Neville Odell was a close run game during the early stages (7 all on the 10th end) but Keith then started to pull away with some very consistent draw bowling to run out the winner on the 17th end. This was a great game to watch between two of the club’s best draw bowlers.

The second of the semi final games between Barney Fleiser and Gary Bayne was also an intriguing game with the lead changing several times and the biggest score differential being 4 shots on the 7th end. From that point on it got very tight with the guys approaching the 24th end on 19 shots to Barney, 18 shots to Gary. Barney then played the first bowl of the end and on completion of his four bowls was holding 3 shots for game, with Gary still to play the final bowl. As Gary has done during this competition, he played a brilliant last bowl to trail the jack to pick up 3 shots to win the game. Clearly one of the best bowls played in the competition and a great way to finish the game.

The final was then played between two very worthy opponents, Gary and Keith, again in quite challenging conditions. This game started very well for Gary where he jumped to a good lead early on but Keith responded, with some very consistent draw bowling to slowly catch up, to the the point where the scores were level at 9 shots each on the 15th end. Keith then drew away to a small lead of 3 shots after the 25th end. This was a great game played by two strong bowlers, however there could only be one winner and Keith maintained his consistency to take the final two ends and the game. Congratulations to both bowlers for putting on a great game for the spectators present and to Keith for a well deserved win.

On behalf of the match committee, we would like to thank all bowlers who participated in this event and played great bowls throughout the competition and all in great spirit. Thanks to Ross Porteous and Terry Parker who filled in at late notice to help us make up team numbers. Thanks also to the guys who assisted with marking and umpiring over the three days of play.
