Women’s Pairs Championship

Wednesday 16th November was the first day of the Women’s Pairs Championship with 14 teams entered, allowing us to run the event in four sections. Sections 1 & 2 had four teams playing three games each and Sections 3 & 4 with three teams, each having a bye and playing two games.

Round 1 saw four very close games finishing within 1 or 2 shots. Round 2 we saw a draw in Section 2 and several competitive bowls delivered in this round. Round 3 was completed in the afternoon resulting in four winning teams overall.

The semi-finals played the following week on Wednesday 23rd November saw Pauline Bourne and Robyn Van Mosseveld playing Shona Carter and Cheryl Greig. A close contest saw Pauline and Robyn win this game 19-16.

In the other semi-final Charmain Harris and Kath Harris played Kerry Hutchinson and Shelley Jeffs – with the Harris combination playing a strong game to come out winners at 26-13.

The final was then between Pauline & Robyn against Kath & Charmain. Pauline and Robyn got away to a good start and were 11-1 on the 5th end. At the 12th end the game was level at 13 all. The following ends displayed great bowls from both sides with Charmain & Kath chipping away and winning four consecutive ends to gain a lead of 18-13. Pauline & Robyn fought back and it was virtually down to the wire with Charmain & Kath two shots up going into the last end.

A nail biting finish saw Charmain deliver her last bowl, under pressure, to come in and gain the shot, giving Kath & Charmain a 3 shot victory and a Championship win, Charmain’s first at Sorrento.
