Winter Bowls at Stirling

Did you know that Sorrento member Egon Mikolajczyk (Miko) runs a 27 week winter bowls competition at the Stirling Bowling Club broken into three seasons of nine weeks? It’s a very popular event with two teams of four players, each from various metro clubs, playing out the winter break in a very competitive but friendly and spirited atmosphere.

Using the Stirling complex allows for play to continue no matter what the weather conditions are outside and with some very windy and wet nights outside, inside we were all warm and dry. Pictured are Sorrento members (L-R) Bob and Shelley Jeffs with Egon Miko at the back, Murray Hulbert, Stan and Robyn Van Mosseveld, Pauline Bourne and Kerry and Ron Hutchinson.

We went into the last night of the middle 9 week season sitting 4th on the ladder. Third placed Doubleview were our opponents but with Murray Hulbert’s team having a good win and Ron Hutchinson’s team drawing, Sorrento ousted Doubleview to take third place from them. Doubleview were extremely gracious about the defeat and we left the rink having had many laughs and of course lots of banter during the game.

Sandy Everest and Jan Paniperis are other Sorrento members who have filled in for team members not available during the season. Sorrento is again represented for the last 9 week season which will conclude just prior to the start of the summer bowling season.

Congratulations has to go to Egon Miko who organises this competition completely by himself and does an incredible job of managing to keep everyone informed of the results, the ladder and who is scheduled to play each week not to mention having to replace players at the last minute.

Great job Egon.

Dash for Cash

The latest and final Dash for Cash for 2022, again generously sponsored by SAFEWAY SECURITY SCREENS was held under showery skies, and on s-l-o-w greens on Saturday 27th August. A great field of 32 teams assembled, which despite a couple of brief rainy interludes, and a small hitch with the scoring, went off well. In all, over $2,500 in prize money was awarded on the day.

The usual format of four matches of 10 ends was played, with players changing greens at lunch time. By lunch, nine teams had won both matches, and with a shower of rain affecting the afternoon matches, only one team managed to win all four matches, and that was Ray Loran, Brian Ledingham, Gary Bobridge and Dave Dunstan. Dave’s team was 31 shots up. Congratulations guys.

All other prize winners are shown below

· 2nd Overall Bob Steven, Greg Clement, Ross Cunningham and Chris Lander: 3 wins + 36 shots

· 3rd Overall Barry Stewart, Peter Snow, Ian Linford and Rhett Butler: 3 wins + 26 shots

· 4th Overall Barry Bradshaw, Paul Bradshaw, Murray Hulbert and Bruce Eagles: 3 wins + 25 shots

· Morning Paul Hunter, Barry Gartrell, Paul Loveland and Jeff West: + 21 shots

· Afternoon Phil Bilich, Mick McCavana, Lindsay Baker and Bob Mulroy; +17 shots

· Round 1 Matt Sharrett, Gary Bayne, Barney Fleiser and Peter Flack: +10 shots

· Round 2 Peter Balcombe, Tim Murray, Jim Spencer and Mick Martin: +11 shots

· Round 3 John Armanasco, Peter Leber, Jan Konig and Paul Burn: +8 shots

· Round 4 Steve Hurley, Richard Herbert, Steve Nanos and Laurie Scott: +13 shots

A total of 74 visitors were among the 128 bowlers who took part, and contrary to last month’s event, most of the winners this month came from Sorrento. A special thanks goes to Ray Stapledon who filled in at the last minute.

And our enormous thanks again to Wendy Saul and her band of kitchen helpers who prepared morning tea, and soup for lunch which was very welcome for the chilly bowlers in the middle of the day.

Training and Development

Clive Adams from Bowls Australia and Cambridge Bowling Club was the special guest at yesterday’s training and development programme, “Beyond the Basics”.

Clive unpacked his own bowling story spanning 37 years. He offered wonderful insights into topics like handling pressure, playing a range of shots, teamship within the rink, and discerning the right shot to play depending on the state/shape of the head.

The group benefited from his wisdom and understanding and were extremely grateful for him giving up his time.

Award Finalist

Sorrento Bowling Club’s Bar Manager, Ian Lucas, has been recognised for his efforts at the Club by being named  a finalist in the 2022 Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence, within the category of Long Term Service, Employee Award.

Ian’s dedication and commitment to his job is clearly demonstrated with his installation of a modern cloud-based point of sale system by BEPOZ in 2019, while also dealing with Covid19 pandemic issues. While not directly one of Ian’s responsibilities, he has been instrumental in generating amazing growth in the Club’s membership and the number and variety of functions held, through his innovative use of technology and communications channels like Facebook. Because of the outstanding customer service that Ian and his staff demonstrate, the Club enjoys substantial repeat and referral business.

Ian actively and enthusiastically supports our volunteers in a wide range of activities that go well beyond his job description. Through his efforts and innovation, Ian’s role has become more of a club manager than a bar manager.

The club wishes him all the best on Friday 9th September when the award winners are announced.

Club Coaches

The Sorrento Bowling Club coaching team has expanded in recent days.

David Dunstan has completed and passed the Bowls WA coaching course held at Midland Morrison Bowling Club just a few weeks ago. Tracey Newman has joined us from Wanneroo and has been an accredited coach for approximately 18 months. Gary Bobridge has joined us from North Beach and has been actively involved in coaching bowlers for the last five years.

David, Tracey and Gary will be assisting our Club Coach Co-ordinator, Bruce Eagles, with a few training courses leading into the start of the pennant season.

Dash for Cash

A bleak weather forecast looked as though it might mean abandoning July’s Dash for Cash, but the decision to go ahead was made on the preceding Thursday and organisers’ fingers were crossed. In the event, only a couple of brief showers interrupted play and all four of the scheduled 10-end matches were played in cold and breezy conditions.

Dash for Cash was again generously sponsored by Safeway Security Screens and our thanks again go to Barry and Paul Bradshaw for their on-going support for these events. Thanks also to Wendy Saul and her band of soup-makers and soup-servers. The hot and hearty soup was certainly welcomed by the cold and hungry bowlers.

Of the 104 bowlers present, 48 were from other clubs, reflecting the wide (and growing) appeal of this event. Unfortunately for our Sorrento bowlers, the majority of the prize winners were visitors!

By the time the bowlers broke for lunch, only seven of the teams had won both matches, but by the end of the day the winners of all rounds had dwindled to three teams. These three took home the major part of the over $2,000 in prize money that was distributed on the day.

All results:

Overall 1st +44 – Alan Bloxham, Marc Marinko, G. Jones, Ryan Moyle

Overall 2nd +28 – Matt Sharrett, Gary Bayne, Barney Fleiser, Peter Flack (pictured above)

Overall 3rd +22 – A. Monson, Geoff Watson, Mike Sweeney, Blake Nairn

Morning Rounds +25 – Phil Griffiths, B. Griffiths, Geoff White, Stewart Gosstray

Afternoon Rounds +14 – David Eadie, Don McKenzie, David Bird, David Hitchman

Round 1 +15 – Barry Stewart, Peter Snow, Shane Loftus, Rhett Butler

Round 2 +13 – Phil Leyland, Wayne Mitchell, Andy Elmer, Brian Saul

Round 3 +7 – Barry Bradshaw, Paul Bradshaw, Murray Hulbert, Bruce Eagles

Round 4 +13 – P. Wilson, Trevor Hines, Laurie Johnson, Bert Straw

Thanks again to the men’s match committee, especially Dan Greig, and to Trevor and Anne Orton for their assistance on the day. Our final Dash for Cash for 2022 will be held on Saturday 27th August.
