Craby Visit

On Friday 19th March, members from the Craby Croquet Club of Rockingham travelled by train to Sorrento for a fun day of Croquet.

Players were collected from the Warwick station by our bus driver, Terry Craddock, then enjoyed a meet and greet morning tea with our members. Despite the heat, a few games were played followed by a light lunch before the Craby players were transported back to the train station.

A wonderful day had by all.

York Tournament

Over the weekend of the 13th & 14th March five players from Sorrento Croquet Club were lucky to get a spot in the York Over 65’s Croquet Tournament. This tournament is always fully booked before it is advertised.

Players from all over the state enjoyed the games and hospitality of the York club. Every game was played with a different partner with individual scores kept.

Congratulations to Terry Craddock, Jan Craddock, Di McGivern, Jenny Wilmot and Cheryl Saul (pictured).

Novice Star

The Croquet Club’s Novice Star tournament attracted many of their new players to join in for a bit of fun and competition. The Novice Star is open to all players who have been playing for under two years.

Congratulations to Lorraine Bates who was the winner of the Novice Star for 2021. Congratulations also to Rose Gannaway who was Runner Up.

Australian Masters Games

Created by the Confederation of Australian Sport in 1987, the Australian Masters Games is a week-long festival of sport that brings together weekend warriors from around Australia, and the world, to enjoy an extensive sport and social program in an exciting holiday destination.

The 2021 Australian Masters Games will take place in Perth from Saturday 9 – Saturday 16 October 2021 and includes both croquet and lawn bowls.

For full details and entry forms click here for croquet, and here for lawn bowls.

Cambridge Daft Doubles

Croquet members took part in the Cambridge Daft Doubles last weekend with two of our players doing particularly well.

Cheryl Saul and new player Wendy Price (pictured) won the competition outright and took home the trophy. With an impressive score of 9 wins and 2 losses they also won the Handicap prize for the competition.

On speaking to Cheryl and Wendy, they both felt that listening to advice given to them while playing each game, and developing a strategy around that advice, gave them an advantage that brought about their success.

Congratulations to you both!

Golf Doubles Club Championship

On Saturday 6th February the Sorrento Croquet Club held their Golf Doubles Club Championships.

Wearing masks, all players battled for the top spot and it was good to see some of our new members playing –  Wendy Price, Margaret Windle, Lorraine Bates and Julie Dempsey.

Congratulations to the winners Terry Harvey and Thora Lay (pictured) and to Runners Up Wendy Price and Margaret Windle.

Croquet Welcomes 2021

With all that happened during 2020, including Covid and the greens undergoing rejuvenation, Sorrento Croquet Club decided to defer their Christmas function and have a “Welcome to 2021 BBQ lunch” instead.

With the Bowling Club’s support, this was held at the club on Friday 22nd January. Members mingled before lunch with a drink and a quiz, which got every one chatting. Pictured above are Frank Bomford, Terry Craddock and Derek Lay.

The cook for the day was Frank Bomford who swore it was at least 40 degrees plus at the  BBQ!

Feedback has been received from members saying how much they enjoyed the day. Well done to all who helped in the setting up and cleaning up.

Croquet Tournament

Sorrento Croquet Club’s travelling foursome Cheryl Saul, Jenny Wilmot, Jan Craddock and Terry Craddock (pictured above) recently competed in the Vic Park Flexi Tournament.

This tournament was level play and they were playing against some of the best!! To get into the correct mindset, they decided not to check out their opponents’ handicaps before the event. This worked well as they won some, lost some, and had a few games coming in very close with a score of 6 out of 7 hoops.

Croquet Back on the Green

The Croquet Club are thrilled to currently have a number of new faces around the green, with people trying out the sport for the first time.

With only eight players allowed per green, and currently only having one green available, our players have had to be rostered on to play. To accommodate this, we have created extra playing times/days until we are back to normal next week.

In the meantime, players are enjoying joining in with Community Bowls on Tuesday nights with a game of Croquet and a sausage sizzle.

Spring Carnival

Sorrento Croquet Club were well represented at the Halls Head Doubles Spring Carnival over the September long weekend.

Terry and Jan Craddock, Cheryl Saul and Jenny Wilmot came equal thirds in their block on the Sunday, while Trish Klemp and Di McGivern came first in their block on the Monday.

Congratulations to all who competed! Pictured L-R: Di McGivern, Trish Klemp, Cheryl Saul, Jenny Wilmot, Jan Craddock, and Terry Craddock.
