Mixed Pairs Championship

Following sectional play on Sunday 12th December, the finals of the Mixed Pairs got underway on Sunday 19th December in mild, sunny conditions with the sea breeze picking up a bit in the afternoon.

Quarter-finals were mainly somewhat one-sided affairs, with Lee Leach and Ron Rogers, Barbara Lorencs and Chris Lander, Wendy Flack and Paul Knight, and Pauline Bourne and Peter Flack progressing to the afternoon semi-finals.

By contrast, the semifinals were very much closer matches, with the Bourne/Flack combination winning over Flack/Knight on the last end by a single shot (17-16), while it took an extra end for Leach/Rogers to get past Lorencs/Lander.

The Mixed Pairs Championship final was played on the afternoon of Friday 14th January, between Lee Leach/Ron Rogers and Pauline Bourne/Peter Flack, in front of a significant number of spectators waiting to compete in the subsequent MegaBowl event.

After early exchanges of shots, the former pair eased away to a 13-7 lead after 13 ends of the 18 end final, only for Bourne and Flack to fight back to 13-11 with two ends to go. However, Leach and Rogers survived the comeback to pick up a shot on each of the last two tight ends to take the victory and the trophy for the third time.
