Invitation Fours

A very successful carnival, again generously sponsored by Trevors Carpets, was held on Saturday 21st May under sunny and warm skies. Unfortunately this event, which had to be rescheduled from last year due to COVID lockdowns, had to do without the main man from Trevors Carpets, Ray Green, because he had personally contracted COVID just prior to the event!

Thirty-six men’s teams from as far away as Bunbury competed in two matches of 13 ends of fours, plus two matches of 11-end pairs. Apart from a couple of delays with the lunch and the final scoring, the event went off without a hitch.

Thanks to the organisers – Dan Greig, Ian Wittber and Trevor Orton, and to John Godfrey who organised the raffle. Thanks also to Wendy Saul and her band of helpers who provided the morning tea and served the lunch provided by Chicken Treat. Thanks too to Anne Orton who helped with recording the scores. The bar manager, Ian Lucas, also expressed his appreciation and very good bar sales were recorded.

The winners were:-

First: Composite team of John Slavich, Justin Opie, Ross Bresland and Kyle McIlroy with four wins and 56 shots up.

Second: Glen Pauling’s South Perth combination (Callum Alberti, Blake Heldt and Scott Walker)

Third: Composite team of Ryan Moyle, Brandon Heta, Simon Deering and David Cosgrove

Fourth: Morley team of Vic Orchard, Phil Fettes, Phil Leyland and W Hinchcliffe

Round 1: Rhett Butler, Terry Ball, Steve Mulhall and John Godfrey (Composite)

Round 2: Norm Shannon, Steve Dobie, Peter Munday and K Swift (Leeming)

Round 3: Tristan Massang, Paul Kelly, Ben Judge and John Motts (Mosman Park)

Round 4: Vic Barbato, Peter Vakovic, Errol McGrath, Errol Rabey (Como)

Unfortunately, our sponsor Ray Green of Trevors Carpets was unable to play at the last minute due to Covid, but his team of fellow Sorrento members managed to come in fifth on the day – Bruce Eagles, Peter Flack, Richard Bone and Greg Taylor (pictured above).

Croquet Novice Star

Last week the Sorrento Croquet Club held its annual Novice Star Competition.

A rainy start to the day, but the weather turned perfect for our competitors during the day. Congratulations to this year’s winner Wendy Price (pictured on the right) and to Runner Up Margaret Windle (left).

Men’s Veteran Singles Championship

Eighteen players signed up for Sectional play in the Men’s Veteran Singles Championship, the last Club Championship of the 2021/22 season. Play took place on Friday April 29th in glorious autumn weather, although B green proved to be on the slow side following rain earlier in the week. Many of the games were closely contested, with at least one featuring an incredible turn-around by Stan van Mosseveld from 15-0 down to win 18-17.

Ultimately, the following won their sections: Dan Greig, Stan van Mosseveld, John Sturk, Keith Minnett, Alan Gallagher and Barry Stewart. The last four named players played alignment games on the afternoon of Thursday May 5th to decide the make-up of one semi-final, while the first two proceeded directly to the second semi-final to be played on the morning of Friday May 6th, to be followed by the final that afternoon. The semi finalists were Stan Van Mosseveld, Dan Greig, John Sturk and Barry Stewart.

The semi finals were played under bright, breezy conditions. In contrast to the Sectional Round, B Green was running very quickly, but the players adapted well and the games were played to a high standard.

Following a tight start to the first semi-final match, with the scores tied at 9 apiece after 10 ends, Stan Van Mosseveld applied the pressure and came through comfortably 21-9 against Dan Greig. The second semi saw John Sturk well ahead early on, leading 18-9 before Barry Stewart staged a comeback to get the score back to 18-16, at which point John moved the jack back for three shots and the game.

The final between Stan and John was a high quality and tight affair through 17 ends at which time John was leading 13-12. However, from that point, Stan really found his line and length, while John started to find the gaps or move the jack only to find another of Stan’s bowls in the scoring position, resulting in the final score of 21-13 to Stan Van Mosseveld, the 2022 Men’s Veteran Champion. This was Stan’s first Championship win at Sorrento.

Parent/Child Event

The Annual Parent/Child competition was played on Sunday 1st May at Sorrento. This was a well-supported competition with 36 entrants, young and older, battling it out over two games of 8 ends (3 bowl pairs). After the first round, the players were separated into two groups based on results from the first round and went out to play off for the second round.

After some close contests and very good bowls by some of the less experienced bowlers, the winner of the first group was Tony Sabatino and Matt with 7 ends plus 8 shots closely followed by Craig and Ken Marshall on 6 ends plus 2 shots up. The second group winner was Frank and Brendan Bomford with 6 ends and 9 shots (great to see Frank back at the club).

While we gave out some prize money to some of the players, it appeared that all participants had a win with the great weather, good greens and friendly competition.

Women’s IRRR

The Womens Inter Region Round Robin was held at Warwick Bowling Club on the 30th of April and 1st of May this year.

Sorrento had four representatives – Pauline Bourne. Robyn van Mosseveld, Liz Marshall and Shona Carter.

The Northern Region team proved too strong in this year’s competition, winning the tournament. Congratulations to Liz and Shona on making the All Stars Team.

Thanks to Wendy Saul for her assistance with management of the team, choosing the All Stars Team and helping to run the tournament.
