Men’s Novice Singles Championship

The Sorrento Men’s Novice Singles was conducted last Saturday, the 9th of April at Sorrento.

There were six entrants which allowed two sectional groups of three to play knockout rounds (21 Up), with the sectional winners and moving into the Final (25 Up).

The first group comprised Eric Doust, Gerald Hanna and Paul Ramsey. This was a keenly contested round of games with some very good bowls played. Gerald Hanna was the eventual winner to progress into the grand final.

The second group was made up of Jan Konig, JJ Landman and Mark Douglass. Again, these knockout games were entertaining to watch and provided some excellent bowling by the participants. In this group, Jan Konig displayed some very strong and consistent bowling to advance into the grand final against Gerald.

Due to all participants having completed all knockout games quickly and efficiently, it allowed us to play the final on the same day. This game started out very evenly with Gerald and Jan playing high-quality bowls to see the scores level on 13 a piece after 16 ends. Gerald then grabbed a good lead of 7 shots after winning the next three ends. This, however, did not last long as Jan bounced back and squared the score again after 24 ends to provide an enthralling finish. After a marathon 28 ends, Jan got the win by 2 shots. A truly great game and played in great spirit by both players.

The Match Committee would like to commend and congratulate all players that participated in this event for displaying the highest standards of sportsmanship, enthusiasm and skill to make this event a success. We also wish Jan all the best for his upcoming game as Sorrento’s representative in the State Novice Champion of Champions event.
