Australia Day

Beautiful weather on Australia Day and a great turn out of 73 players meant our annual Australia v The Rest of the World was a huge success once again!

With a wide range of patriotism on display, members enjoyed their bowls followed by a sausage sizzle cooked up by Alan Susta.

The biggest winners from the Australian rinks were Brian Saul, Kaye Martin, Gary Bayne and Evan Cosh (pictured above) who won their game by 16 shots. For the Rest of the World, David Cowell, Neville Odell and Peter McIntosh were the biggest winners by 14 shots.

Australia took the title with a total score of 125, defeating The Rest of the World 85.

Croquet Welcomes 2021

With all that happened during 2020, including Covid and the greens undergoing rejuvenation, Sorrento Croquet Club decided to defer their Christmas function and have a “Welcome to 2021 BBQ lunch” instead.

With the Bowling Club’s support, this was held at the club on Friday 22nd January. Members mingled before lunch with a drink and a quiz, which got every one chatting. Pictured above are Frank Bomford, Terry Craddock and Derek Lay.

The cook for the day was Frank Bomford who swore it was at least 40 degrees plus at the  BBQ!

Feedback has been received from members saying how much they enjoyed the day. Well done to all who helped in the setting up and cleaning up.

Women’s Novice Singles

Congratulations to Jennifer Page, our Women’s Novice Singles Champion, and Runner Up Debbie Cranswick.

Both Jennifer and Debbie recently became capitated members of Sorrento Bowling Club, having both joined the club about a year ago as social members playing on Friday afternoons and Sunday afternoons. Neither of these ladies have participated in Pennant Games or Club Championships due to work commitments, but hopefully we will see them join our Pennant teams some time in the future and become great assets to the Sorrento Women Bowlers.

It was an absolute delight to watch the two games they played for the Championship, with both women impressing the spectators with a show of top division bowling.

Jennifer Page took control in both games, demonstrating a delivery that saw her bowls connect with the Jack on most occasions. Debbie Cranswick also showed us excellent bowling but found it difficult to stop Jen from coming in at the last minute to take away any shots that might have added to her score.

Jennifer winning both the games took the title of Novice Champion for 2021. Some great bowls played by both ladies before an appreciative crowd. Well done!!

Chase the Joker

After five long months, our Chase the Joker jackpot of $5000 was finally won last night!

May Leyland was thrilled when her number was called and a loud cheer erupted as the popular Life Member showed the Joker she had selected.

Congratulations May!!

Men’s State Pairs 2020

The 2020 Men’s State Pairs was held over three gruelling days of extreme heat from 27th-29th December.

It was the first time on record that all four final players were Over 60s and the first time since 2000 that all finalists were from the same club – in this case, Sorrento! Congratulations to the winners Bruce Eagles and Greg Taylor who defeated Chris Lander and Ross Cunningham to take the title. Well done to all four players!!

Croquet Tournament

Sorrento Croquet Club’s travelling foursome Cheryl Saul, Jenny Wilmot, Jan Craddock and Terry Craddock (pictured above) recently competed in the Vic Park Flexi Tournament.

This tournament was level play and they were playing against some of the best!! To get into the correct mindset, they decided not to check out their opponents’ handicaps before the event. This worked well as they won some, lost some, and had a few games coming in very close with a score of 6 out of 7 hoops.
