Men’s Premier Player of the Year

On Saturday, the Men’s Premier side had their end of year windup at the club. All players attended including some of their wives. Lunch and drinks were provide all afternoon and a fun game of corner to corner for a $100 dollars was run and won by Paul Knight, who then donated his winnings to Matt Sharrett in view of what happened to him on the last game at Cockburn when he picked up the wrong bowls bag and had to Uber back to and from Sorrento ($350 later).

The secret vote count was conducted throughout the afternoon with scores continually being updated on the board and rounds 17 and 18 kept secret and read out, which highlighted a thrilling finish in which Rhett Butler finished ahead of Chris Lander by only half a point. Dan Nicholls who lead most of the day finished in third spot.

The whole day was funded by the money our Fines Master collected throughout the year. Ross (AKA “THE SHERIFF“) Cunningham did an outstanding job all year. Nobody or anything escaped him. Hence the huge pot of money!!!

ANZAC Day Two-Up Pairs

On Anzac Day, 28 players turned up to play in this event. The players were ranked and placed in two pools, with one name from each pool drawn to play together. The scoring system for this event is that zero points are awarded for each end where the team is less than “two-up”, with one point awarded for every end over two-up. To add to the excitement, each team was entitled to nominate a “powerplay” end where any shots scored would be doubled on that end.

The greens were running well, and over the 18 ends played, all pairs scored points ranging from the winners’ 17 points to a couple of teams scoring 4 points. Carol Booker (visiting from North Beach) and Keith Minnett were the winners, with Shirley Palmer and Trevor Orton one point behind. Interestingly Paul Doherty and Brian Collins, who played the winners, managed to run third in what was a high-scoring match. Betty Stern and Sandy Everest earned the fourth and final prize money with 13 points.

Thanks to Dan Greig and Trevor Orton for organising this event.

Champion of Champions Novice Singles

Over the weekend Jan Konig and Liz McTaggart represented Sorrento in the Champion of Champions Novice Singles. They both played some excellent bowls and Liz was unfortunately eliminated after the sectional play on Day One.

Jan was successful in his section, playing some outstanding bowls to defeat his opponents 17-0 and 17-3 to progress to the alignment round. Jan continued his good form, prevailing 17-4 to progress to Morley for the finals on Day Two. Jan convincingly won both his quarter final and semi final, progressing to the final where his brilliant run unfortunately come to an end as he went down 14-21 in a closely contested final. Congratulations on a very fine effort.

Thanks also to Selection Committee who donated drink vouchers, enabling us to award the AM and PM winners with a hard-earned drink.

We would like to thank our sponsor, Duncraig Fresh IGA, who donated $100 and the Sorrento Bowling Club who donated $300 from funds raised by Women’s Fundraising during the season. This enabled all prizes to be generous and added to a successful day. We would all like to thank Robyn Rowe for her help in the kitchen. We all enjoyed the day and look forward to doing it again next year.

Joondalup/Wanneroo Trophy

Tuesday 12th April saw the competition for the annual Joondalup/Wanneroo Trophy, this year held at Merriwa.

16 Sorrento ladies competed in our four teams, with another two of our players helping out other teams short on numbers. With seven clubs from within the two shires represented, competition was fierce but friendly.

Sorrento brought home the trophy finishing with 17 points, a narrow win over Merriwa 15, Joondalup 14, Wanneroo and Yanchep 11.5, Warwick 9 and Quinns Rocks 8.

Next year we will defend our title at Joondalup. Congratulations to all who participated and to the selectors who were on the phone up until the start of play, organising players between clubs.

Men’s Novice Singles Championship

The Sorrento Men’s Novice Singles was conducted last Saturday, the 9th of April at Sorrento.

There were six entrants which allowed two sectional groups of three to play knockout rounds (21 Up), with the sectional winners and moving into the Final (25 Up).

The first group comprised Eric Doust, Gerald Hanna and Paul Ramsey. This was a keenly contested round of games with some very good bowls played. Gerald Hanna was the eventual winner to progress into the grand final.

The second group was made up of Jan Konig, JJ Landman and Mark Douglass. Again, these knockout games were entertaining to watch and provided some excellent bowling by the participants. In this group, Jan Konig displayed some very strong and consistent bowling to advance into the grand final against Gerald.

Due to all participants having completed all knockout games quickly and efficiently, it allowed us to play the final on the same day. This game started out very evenly with Gerald and Jan playing high-quality bowls to see the scores level on 13 a piece after 16 ends. Gerald then grabbed a good lead of 7 shots after winning the next three ends. This, however, did not last long as Jan bounced back and squared the score again after 24 ends to provide an enthralling finish. After a marathon 28 ends, Jan got the win by 2 shots. A truly great game and played in great spirit by both players.

The Match Committee would like to commend and congratulate all players that participated in this event for displaying the highest standards of sportsmanship, enthusiasm and skill to make this event a success. We also wish Jan all the best for his upcoming game as Sorrento’s representative in the State Novice Champion of Champions event.
