Final Dash for Cash

The fourth and final Dash for Cash for 2021, again sponsored by Safeway Security Screens, was held under grey but fine skies on Saturday 28th August. 22 teams of men had registered for this event, but unfortunately only 21 teams turned up, which meant a frantic search for players to make up a balancing team. This search was ultimately successful and a team was cobbled together of injured and part-time bowlers, including one lady, taking to the greens slightly later than planned.

Four matches of 11 ends were played, with two matches in the morning and two in the afternoon separated by the customary, but nevertheless welcome, soup-and-a-roll lunch. Thanks to the ladies who provided the lunch and also the morning tea prior to play. In total about eight ladies volunteered to help during the day and their contribution was very much appreciated.

After the morning rounds only four teams had won both matches, and by the end of the third match only two teams remained undefeated, with one of these falling at the final hurdle. While there were 39 visiting bowlers of the 88 competing, Sorrento players dominated the results.

The full results of all winners is shown below:-

Scroungers

GIRL POWER REIGNS AGAIN

Welcome back to Sunday Scroungers where 20 (yes 20) bowlers turned out to compete. Welcome to the new bowlers for this season Jennifer Page, Steve Platts, Kaye Martin and Adrienne and Dawn Price.

Round winners on the day were Peter Flack, June Gregory, Mark Douglass, Matt Sharrett, Bob Jeffs and Steve Platts.

The first semi saw Peter, Mark and Matt fight out a close affair with Mark winning by ½ point (two resting touchers at the same time) and Matt coming second. The second semi saw Bob, Steve and June play off, with June winning the semi well and Steve coming second.

So it was Matt against Steve in a playoff for third spot and Mark verses June in the final. Both games were won convincingly by Matt and June. Congratulations to June, our second lady winner…next week could be three in a row.

Thanks to Jan Paniperis for the sausages and the Green Staff for preparing the green. Our last game and final for all the winners will be Sunday 12th September.

Croquet Bowls

Last Wednesday our Croquet players started out the day with a game of Croquet Bowls.

Using a golf ball as the Jack, the idea was to place your croquet ball as close to the jack as possible, only hitting the jack if it was to your advantage. Some players got very serious in the measuring to see who had won! This was a good game for players to practice the placement balls.

After the game, players went inside to enjoy some pizza and the presentation of 2020/2021 awards and trophies.

New Croquet Club

Earlier this year a new Croquet Club opened in Belmont WA, attracting many new players to the game.

On the weekend, Belmont hosted a Croquetwest event of Golf Croquet Doubles.

Many clubs participated on the day, including six players from Sorrento – Jenny Wilmot, Cheryl Saul, Lorraine Bates, Wendy Price, Jan Craddock and Terry Craddock (pictured).

It was one of the coldest weekends we have had, with Sunday seeing them all in four layers of clothing and wet weather gear! The general feeling among players was although it was a cold and wet weekend. it was a lot of fun and a great way to support a new Club.

Training and Development

Sorrento Bowling Club has introduced a pilot Training and Development program to be run over six weeks. With eight newer bowlers invited to participate, the program was designed by Bruce Eagles with support from Richard Bone and will combine theory along with on green drills, to teach new bowlers the fundamentals of the game.

The new initiative was launched last week with Vice-President (Sport and Participation) Trevor Orton and Men’s Captain Peter Flack offering encouragement and support to the bowlers.

In recent times, the Club has had many brand new bowlers join our Club and training and development needs to be a priority for these new bowlers, with the possibility of the course being repeated at a later date.

July Dash for Cash

The wettest July in Perth for decades made the likelihood of holding the third scheduled Dash for Cash of 2021 an unlikely proposition, particularly as a couple of cold fronts passed through Perth earlier in the week, but a decision was taken on Thursday to proceed, trusting in the slightly more optimistic forecast for Saturday to remain largely dry. A couple of teams elected to drop out, but 24 teams of hardy men turned out for the event, sponsored again by Safeway Security Screens, on Saturday the 31st July.

Four rounds of 10 ends were played, with a soup-and-a-roll lunch provided by our team of volunteers being especially welcome to enable some thawing of cold bowlers. Ultimately, play was completed with only a brief break for a passing shower in the early afternoon. The greens (E and C) proved playable, albeit quite slow, as would be expected in the middle of this wet winter.

Prize money was widely distributed, as usual, with the winners as listed below:-

1st Overall     R Moyle, J Gilchrist, M Hansen, M Leed 4 wins + 15 shots
2nd                 P Snow, B Keily, B Stewart, G Bayne       4 wins + 11 shots

Many thanks are due to Trevor and Anne Orton for their general input, collecting entry money and in undertaking scoring duties. Thanks also to the ladies who catered wonderfully for morning tea and lunch. There were many players commenting on the great quality of the food provided.

Our particular gratitude goes to Barry Bradshaw’s Safeway Security Screens for their on-going sponsorship of Dash for Cash events, first started 11 years ago. The last competition of this year’s series is scheduled for Saturday 28th August.
