Bowler of the Year

Congratulations to Chris Lander who won the Men’s Over 60s Bowler of the Year for 2020-21 at the Bowls WA Awards Night last Friday night.

A well deserved win following an outstanding season by Chris!

World Croquet Day

World Croquet Day was held recently at Nedlands Croquet Club.

Sorrento was well represented by our awesome foursome – Jenny Wilmot, Cheryl Saul, Jan Craddock and Terry Craddock.

A lot of fun games were held on the day along with an exhibition from our State players. Congratulations to Terry who won the lucky mallet draw.

Champion of Champions

The weekend of Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th May saw the rescheduled Champion of Champions Singles events for Men, Women, Novice Men and Novice Women.

In the Women’s event, Pauline Bourne drew a tough section and had to wait on the outcome of the final game between her opponents, eventually missing out on progressing to the knockouts. Kyle McIlroy won his section with close games all round. Unfortunately, he missed out on a quarter final spot going down to the eventual winner Cody Packer.

In the Novice Men’s, Barney Fleiser also had a tough section, playing some great bowls and learning from the experience. Jennifer Page (pictured above) won her section in the Novice Women’s and her first knockout to progress to the quarterfinal. Unfortunately, despite some great bowling, she went down in that game 16-17.

Congratulations to all our players on representing Sorrento Bowling Club in this prestigious event.

Women’s Handicap Triples

Our last Women’s Championship for the season was the Handicap Triples played on Tuesday 11th May 2021.

This event is probably the most popular on our Women’s Fixture calendar, bringing in the largest amount of entries to the game of all our Championships. We had thirty entries giving us 10 teams on the green.

It is a pleasure for all ladies involved being able to play with different people from other divisions. A points system is used to determine how the teams will be selected making all teams equal.

It was a beautiful day and the greens were in good condition. We played two games of 15 ends, one in the morning and one after lunch.

Our Winners of the day were: Pauline Bourne, Denise Odell, Shona Carter (pictured above)
Runners Up: Charmain Harris, Cheryl Greig, June Gregory
Third Place: Pauline Marsden, Shirley Palmer, Sandra Minnett
Fourth Place: Lorraine Hyde, Glen Larcombe, Liz Marshall

We would like to thank our Sponsor for the Day, Dickies Tree Services, who donated towards our prize money for the event, enabling us to award prizes to four of the ten teams taking part.

Trevors Carpets Invitation Fours

The much-delayed second Trevors Carpets Men’s Fours was held at Sorrento on Saturday 8th May 2021. This event was postponed from last year due the Coronavirus. A full field of 38 teams of fours was registered, despite a clash with the State Mixed Pairs Championship, assembling on a bright and sunny day. Players from as far afield as Dunsborough, and across the metropolitan area took part. Midweek heavy rain made the greens a little slow, but the removal of the need to wear COVID masks from midnight that day enhanced the enjoyment of the day enormously.

This event consisted of two matches of 13 ends of fours, with two matches of 3-bowl spilt pairs over lunch. With over $8,000 in prize money to be distributed on the day, fierce competition was expected, and in the end only five teams achieved the maximum four possible wins. Therefore the first-to-fifth placings were decided between these five teams. A full list of prize-winners is set out below.

First Overall: Don Leeson (Cambridge), David Opie (Cambridge), Sam Scott (Doubleview) and Chris Lander (Sorrento) [+37 shots]

Second Overall: Jerome Clayton, Leo Mola, Jeff Post and Mark Douthie (North Beach) [+34 shots]

Third Overall: Wes Nielsen (Joondalup), Mal Burton (Sorrento), Rhett Butler (Sorrento) and Dan Nichols (Bassendean) [+31]

Fourth Overall: Peter Morgan (Sorrento), Brian Saul (Sorrento), Andy Elmer (Bassendean) and Shane Rixom (Sorrento) [+27 shots percentage 200%]

Fifth Overall: Peter Ker, Stephen Patterson, Tom Mitchell and Anthony Williams (Manning) [+27shots percentage 179%]

Round 1: Graeme Winter, John O’Brien, Steven Appleton and Bob Gillian (Merriwa) [+ 16 shots)

Round 2: Dan Greig, Pat Dichiera, Ken Giles and Tony Sabatino (Sorrento) [+14 shots]

Round 3: Mark Thomas, Mark Potente, Ros Pringle and Arthur Bartlett (all Kalamunda) [+20 shots]

Round 4: Barry Stewart, Denis Croker, Peter Snow and Trevor Orton (Sorrento) [+14 shots]

Congratulations to all winners. A special mention to Chris Lander who maintained his recent run of form, continuing on from his recent success as State Men’s Over 60’s singles champion by also being a part of the winning team for event. Chris was very gracious and thankful to the sponsors, volunteers and organisers when accepting his team’s prize.

Thanks must go to Ray Green from Trevors Carpets who was unfortunately unable to attend due to ill-health, but was represented by his wife Maureen. Thanks also to Pauline Marsden, John Godfrey, and especially to Jan Cook and her small army of volunteers who helped feed the men on the day. Also thanks to Lee Leach, Dan Greig, Neville Odell, Evan Cosh and to Anne and Trevor Orton who managed the set-up and clean-up of the club and greens and for maintaining the scoring records for the day. Thanks also to the greens staff who prepared the greens and surrounds for play.

Importance of Grants

Members will recall that in the early part of 2020, the Club applied for a $20,000 Sector Support for Resilient Organisations grant. This funding was available for eligible not-for-profit arts, sports and community organisations, impacted by COVID-19, to maintain staff, pivot operations, collaborate, develop new ways of working, innovate, maintain viability and build resilience as appropriate for future recovery.

The objective of this program was to contribute towards ensuring that eligible organisations were able continue delivering ongoing benefit for the WA community. Conditional approval was given in July 2020 and grant funds followed.

The grant proved highly valuable during the Covid lockdown and also subsequent periods when the Club’s operations were restricted. Our reduced cash flow was supplemented by this grant funding allowing the Club to maintain its bowling greens and croquet courts; replenish our bar stocks; comply with Covid requirements and training; maintain the clubhouse to a clean and compliant standard; allow the new BePoz point-of-sale system training and implementation to continue; and to operate the Club and provide events and services during periods of significantly restricted patronage.

We are extremely grateful to the State government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest for their support of the Sorrento Bowling in Western Australia. As we know, sport and recreation build stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities.

Thank you to all players for following our guidelines to adhere to government restrictions in place.

Congratulations to the Sorrento team of Barbara Lorencs, Pauline Marsden, Charmain Harris and Wendy Flack (pictured here with sponsor and fellow member Barry Bradshaw) who took out third place.
