Women’s Pairs Championship

The Women’s Pairs Championship commenced with Sectional Play on Wednesday 24th February with 12 teams over four sections of three, the finals then continuing on Sunday 28th March.

In the first semifinal, Coral Smith and Wendy Flack had a close game against Jan Cook and Liz Marshall with the final score being 16-14 to move Smith and Flack into the final. In the second semifinal, Barbara Lorencs and Pauline Marsden took charge of their game against Kaye Martin and Carmel Hyde from the beginning, giving them a win of 15-4 and a place in the final.

The final match was exciting to watch with spectators seeing excellent bowling from both teams. Barbara and Pauline took the lead up until the 10th end when Coral and Wendy equalised with them on the 11th end making it 9 all. The next couple of ends went to Coral and Wendy, giving them a lead of 5 shots up. With three ends still to play, Barbara and Pauline took charge of the game and took out the Pairs Championship event with a score of 19-14.

Women’s Singles Championship

The Women’s Singles Championship final was held alongside the Men’s on Sunday 21st March, following two previous days (a Wednesday and Sunday) of sectional and knockout play.

The previous Sunday, Barbara Lorencs had defeated Kerry Hutchinson in the first semifinal, with scores close until Barb pulled away with some great consistent bowling to win 21-12. The second semifinal saw Pauline Bourne and Wendy Flack in a long and close tussle, Pauline picking up three shots on the final end to win 21-19.

The final between Barb and Pauline was always going to be a brilliant display of bowling, and they didn’t disappoint the crowd. Pauline settled quickly and went to an 11-2 lead. With the mat in hand, Barb set longer ends and gradually clawed her way back into the game. With scores tied at 14-14, the heads were tight and the pressure on both players, Pauline eventually winning her third Singles Championship 25-22.

Men’s Singles Championship

The Sorrento Men’s Singles Championship was completed on Sunday 21st March, under relatively hot, still conditions and a nicely paced ’B’ green conducive to good bowling.

One semi-final had been completed on the previous Sunday, with Kyle McIlroy progressing 25-10 over Frank Tyson.  The second semi, between Dan Greig and Steve Draper, was a closer, fluctuating affair which saw scores tied up at 21 apiece before Dan drew two shots on each of the last two ends to close out the match 25-21.

The final between Kyle and Dan was a relatively one-sided match, with Kyle’s very consistent drawing, allied to the occasional drive, proving too much for Dan, resulting in a final score of 25-5 and Kyle’s name on the Singles’ trophy for the first time.

Golf Croquet Club Singles

In March we held our Club Singles Championships for Golf Croquet and it was good to see a couple of our newer members participate.

Congratulations go to Jenny Wilmot who took out first place. Runner Up was very close with Jan Craddock taking second place, only just beating new player Wendy Price by 5 points.

Invitation Fours

Friday the 19th March Sorrento Women welcomed 36 teams to take part in our annual Trevors Carpets Invitation Fours. This event is probably the biggest competition on our Women’s Calendar with Division One and above players invited to compete in this prestigious event with the prize money offered at $4000.

Within our 36 entries we had teams from as far as Gingin, York, Meadow Springs, Safety Bay, Dudley Park and most of the Metro clubs taking part. The winners (pictured above) were the Manning team of Liz Matthews, Robyn O’Brien, Sue Hogg and Sue Barrow. Second place was also a Manning team, with Gosnells taking third place.

A wonderful day was had by everyone at our Club, everyone going home happy and full of praise for their day at Sorrento.

Thank you to our sponsor, Ray Green of Trevors Carpets, without his generosity the Invitation Fours would not be as successful. A big thank you to our Croquet ladies for supplying our delicious home baked goodies for the morning tea, it was amazing. Thank you also to our women and men from Sorrento who do their utmost to make this day such a memorable occasion.

Craby Visit

On Friday 19th March, members from the Craby Croquet Club of Rockingham travelled by train to Sorrento for a fun day of Croquet.

Players were collected from the Warwick station by our bus driver, Terry Craddock, then enjoyed a meet and greet morning tea with our members. Despite the heat, a few games were played followed by a light lunch before the Craby players were transported back to the train station.

A wonderful day had by all.
