Cambridge Daft Doubles

Croquet members took part in the Cambridge Daft Doubles last weekend with two of our players doing particularly well.

Cheryl Saul and new player Wendy Price (pictured) won the competition outright and took home the trophy. With an impressive score of 9 wins and 2 losses they also won the Handicap prize for the competition.

On speaking to Cheryl and Wendy, they both felt that listening to advice given to them while playing each game, and developing a strategy around that advice, gave them an advantage that brought about their success.

Congratulations to you both!

Mixed Pairs Championship

Congratulations to Col Jasper and Barb Lorencs on winning the Mixed Pairs Championship last Sunday against Ron Rogers and Lee Leach.

The 18-end final took place in front of a small but appreciative group of spectators, augmented by the occasionally noisy overflow from the Darts season wrap-up lunch taking place inside the clubhouse at the same time.

The match was a see-sawing affair with the draw bowling and steady shot accumulation of the Lorencs/Jasper team countered by intermittent multi-shot scores by Leach/Rogers who came up with 4 shots three times over the course of the match.

From 15-all after 16 ends, Lorencs/Jasper’s consistency finally prevailed 18-15 to lift the trophy for the first time, while two-time winners Leach and Rogers had to settle for second place.

Golf Doubles Club Championship

On Saturday 6th February the Sorrento Croquet Club held their Golf Doubles Club Championships.

Wearing masks, all players battled for the top spot and it was good to see some of our new members playing –  Wendy Price, Margaret Windle, Lorraine Bates and Julie Dempsey.

Congratulations to the winners Terry Harvey and Thora Lay (pictured) and to Runners Up Wendy Price and Margaret Windle.

Croquet Australia Day

Our Croquet Members enjoyed an Australia v Rest of the World competition on Australia Day with a full field of sixteen players.

With equal numbers for both teams, this year the Aussies didn’t have to poach players.

To enable the new members to have an understanding of what competition is like, four games were played at 45 mins each, with little time during the games other than to organise the draw for the next game!

The winners were “Rest of the World” with 178 hoops over “Aussies” 144 hoops. Overall hoop winner was Trish Klemp and best dressed was won by Jenny Wilmot with her South African Zulu traditional costume.

After the games all players enjoyed a sausage sizzle with fellow bowler members.

8 Badge

Congratulations to Evan Cosh, Pat Dichiera, Mike McGeehan and Ian Wittber on their 8 Badge from last Thursday’s pennant game, picked up on the first end of the game.
