Team Spirit

The Men’s Premier Division and 1st Division Blue players celebrated the season’s break last Saturday night with a meal of crayfish and BBQ sausages, along with a few quiet drinks. Ladies who generously prepared a salad for the occasion also joined the festivities. The crayfish were generously donated by Shane Loftus.

The Premier team also took this opportunity to present Chris Lander with the 1st Division Players Trophy, which he won for the 2019/20 season.

For the past three seasons the Premier side has collected money through excess bus hire fees and a steady array of fines levied to players after each game. 1st Division Blue joined in the fun last season with their own bus rides and levied fines, and of course introduced the infamous “crab award” for a player who does something particularly noticeable but for the wrong reasons! Danny Condon selflessly donates his time to drive the bus.

All costs for Saturday’s celebration were funded from the player’s accumulated funds and the Club appreciates the teams making use of our facilities and generating substantial bar sales for the night!

A great initiative and one that brings players together and drives team spirit.

Women’s Triples Championship

The Women’s Triples Championship was held over three weeks. With nine teams entered, Sectional Play gave us three sections each with one winner, and the best runner up going through to the Knockout games.  Format was two bowls per player, 14 ends for Sectional Play and 16 ends in the Knockout Games and Final.

Sectional Play started on Sunday the 6th December along with the Men’s Triples.

Friday the 11th we held our semi-final games, with the first game being Sandy Everest with Lee Leach and Wendy Saul competing against Jan Power-Tuke with Kerry Hutchinson and Wendy Flack. The second semifinal was Robyn Van Mosseveld with Shelley Jeffs and Lesley Hughes competing against Jackie Maxwell, Cheryl Greig and Kath Harris.

The winners of the semi-finals were Power-Tuke’s team going on to the final against Maxwell’s team.

The final was held the evening of Friday 18th December, this was also in conjunction with the Men’s final. The weather conditions were good although there was a slight wind which at times had some effect on the play, sometimes strong enough to keep bowls away from the jack!!

Maxwell’s team got off to a good start taking the first two ends, with Power-Tuke joining the game on the 3rd end. The bowling from both teams was exceptional and kept all of the spectators on the edge of their seats as the teams constantly exchanged the lead.

With one end left to play, the Power-Tuke team were sitting with a three shot lead leaving the Maxwell team with a mountain to climb on the last end. However, they showed no nerves and managed to come up with the necessary three shots to tie the game.

There must be a winner and a loser, so an extra end was played and after excellent bowls from both teams the Maxwell team emerged as winners by one shot to claim the Triples Trophy. An amazing game to watch!

Congratulations to the Winners Jackie Maxwell, Cheryl Greig and Kath Harris, also the Runners Up Jan Power-Tuke, Kerry Hutchinson and Wendy Flack.

Men’s Triples Championship

The team of Allan Barron, Mal Burton and Leith Oldham (pictured) defeated Bruce Eagles, Ian Linford and Matt Sharrett 19-11 to be the Men’s Triples Champions for this season.

In the semi finals Barron’s team defeated the team of Shane Loftus, Pat Murray and Kyle McIlroy in a very competitive match 17-14 after being level at 14 all with two ends to go. In the other semi final, Eagles’ team came from behind to defeat the team of Colin Jasper, Peter Snow and Denis Croker 16-9.

In the final Eagles’ team started strongly to lead 5-0 after two ends but thereafter were out bowled by a more consistent team on the night. Leith Oldham had an excellent game as lead and his efforts were complimented by strong performances from Mal Burton and Allan Barron. Bruce Eagles played some big bowls towards the end to keep his side in the hunt but to no avail.

8 Badges

Two Women’s Pennants sides were awarded their 8 badges this week.

Saturday’s Pennant team of Kath Harris (absent), Wendy Saul, Kerry Hutchinson and Pauline Marsden picked up their 8 against Wanneroo in the second game of the season.

Tuesday’s Pennant team of Coral Smith, Jan Cook, Robyn Van Mosseveld and Pauline Bourne earned their 8 this week – also against Wanneroo.

Well done ladies!!

Winter Wonderland

The Club was transformed into a Winter Wonderland for an end-of-year work function held last weekend by Spotlight Joondalup. Over 60 guests enjoyed finger foods and danced the night away to a DJ.

It appears our great bar service was also enjoyed, with this review received on our Facebook page:

“We had our work party there on Saturday night. Great atmosphere and the bar tender Debbie is a complete legend. She remembered my drink and knew my name. Great customer service. recommend 100%.”

Picnic at the Park

Some of our Sorrento Women bowlers played in Osborne Park’s Gala Day last week, themed Picnic at the Park.

Winners of the best Picnic Bonnets were Shirley Palmer, Helen Teasdale, Glen Larcombe and Ros Newick (pictured above).

A reminder that Sorrento’s Gala Day will be held on Friday 8th January. If you haven’t already put your name down to volunteer, please do so on the board in the Ladies Lounge.

Joe Stow Charity Event

Last Friday our social bowlers held their annual Joe Stow Heart Foundation charity event, with a great turnout on a lovely day for bowls.

Congratulations to everyone who participated to ensure the day was a success, and to the winners Jenny Bartlett, Brenda Richardson, Peter Irvine and Doug Eisenhammer (pictured).

Well done also to Runners Up Clive Webber, Colin Scott and Herbert Eisenmann.

COVID-19 Contact Register

Coming into effect from Saturday 5th December, it is a mandatory requirement that our Club operate a contact register. When arriving at Sorrento Bowling Club you will be required to register by one of two means – either by use of the SafeWA app or by completing a paper-based register.

Please bear in mind that with a large number of people arriving at the same time for pennant games, social bowls etc. there could be some delays when using the register for the first time. The quickest method is to use the SafeWA app, so if this is your preferred choice please ensure you have downloaded the app and have your phone ready on arrival. Visit the WA Government here for further information.

Mixed Fours Championship

One of the less fancied teams, lead by evergreen Spider Webb, shone on the final day of the Mixed Fours Championship producing two excellent performances to take out the championship.

In the semifinals Spider Webb‘s team easily accounted for Rob Tozer’s team 21-7 and Robyn Van Mosseveld’s four were too consistent for the team led by Murray Hulbert 23-12.

In the final, rookie Matt Sharrett playing third maintained his impressive form to achieve back to back championships after being a member of the winning Men’s Fours in his first year of bowls. With Kaye Martin playing second and Carole Ford leading the team, they were undefeated in the event.

In the final the Webb team were too strong on the day for the team of Robyn and Stan Van Mosseveld and Shelley and Bob Jeffs, winning 21-14.
