Men’s Over 60s State Triples

Congratulations to the Sorrento team of Bruce Eagles, Ian Linford and Greg Taylor on winning the Men’s Over 60s State Triples title on Wednesday 25th November, defeating the composite team of Marcus Merz, Max Petrich and Greg Reagan.

Using their home-ground advantage, Bruce’s team handled the blustery conditions to get away to an 8-2 lead but some great saves by the opposition skip saw them level the scores at 9-9 then draw ahead to lead 17-12 with only two ends to go.

However, Sorrento battled it out for the last two ends with some incredible shots to win the game 18-17. Well done to you all!

Busselton Ladies Classic

Congratulations to Liz Marshall who was part of the composite team who won the  Busselton Ladies Classic held over the weekend of 21st and 22nd November at the Busselton Bowling Club.

Liz teamed up with North Beach’s Rhonda Prosser and Debra Rhine along with Irene Arndt from Safety Bay.

Croquet Back on the Green

The Croquet Club are thrilled to currently have a number of new faces around the green, with people trying out the sport for the first time.

With only eight players allowed per green, and currently only having one green available, our players have had to be rostered on to play. To accommodate this, we have created extra playing times/days until we are back to normal next week.

In the meantime, players are enjoying joining in with Community Bowls on Tuesday nights with a game of Croquet and a sausage sizzle.

Women’s Fours Championship

Seven teams entered the Women’s Fours Championship, giving us one Section of Four and one Section of Three.  Because of the small number of teams we decided to take a winner and runner up from each Section to give us four teams to go through to the semi-final.

The Winner of Section One was Robyn Van Mosseveld’s team and the Runner Up Jan Cook’s team. The winner of Section Two was Pauline Bourne’s team, and Runners Up Moira Dean’s team.

In the first semi-final Robyn Van Mosseveld took the lead in the first 3 ends of the game, then the next 3 ends were taken by Moira Dean’s team. The game remained close with Dean’s team winning by 2 shots. In the second semi-final Pauline Bourne’s team and Jan Cook’s team were close throughout, Bourne winning 19-13.

The final was a great start for Moira Dean, Kerry Hutchinson, Lesley Hughes and Carmel Hyde going into the lead 10-2 after 10 ends over Pauline Bourne, Lee Leach, Robyn Woodward and Coral Smith. A fightback saw scores level at 10-10 after 16 ends. The extra end to determine the winner saw Dean’s team pick up one shot to win the final.

Men’s Fours Championship

Thirteen teams entered the Men’s Fours Championship, divided into four sections. The winning skippers of the four sections were Brian Collins, Peter Flack, Bruce Eagles and Mal Burton.

In the first semi-final Peter Flack’s team defeated the team of Brian Collins 13-11 in a closely fought contest with the lead changing a number of times. In the second  semi-final Bruce Eagles’ team lead the whole match against the team led by Mal Burton (despite some anxious moments) to win 17-11.

In the final the Eagles team consisting of rookie Matt Sharrett leading, veteran Russ Lockwood playing second and Ian Linford playing third, were  too strong and won comfortably 19-6 against the Flack team of Bob Jeffs, Spider Webb and Stan Van Mosseveld.

Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup was celebrated in style at the Club on Tuesday 3rd November.

Our fashionable crowd enjoyed the entertainment of Dizzy Miss Lizzy and a delicious meal, along with a Croquet raffle and sweep with some lucky winners. Moira provided an interesting quiz that was won by the Hatters!

The afternoon was rounded off with a lot of action on the dance floor. A big thank you to Women’s Captain Jan Cook and her team of helpers who created an amazing theme to the room that added to the great atmosphere.

Dunsborough Ladies Classic

Three Sorrento Women’s teams made their fifth annual road trip to Dunsborough to compete in the Ladies Classic, a two day carnival run over 29th and 30th October.

With fine weather (a huge improvement on last year’s rain and cold) there were some great games, and quality opposition, playing against country and metro teams from around the state.

The ladies stayed in homes of family and friends, and by all accounts the evenings were a lot of fun!!

A great few days spent by all, renewing bowling friendships and making new ones.
