Helloworld Day Tour

Wednesday 28th October saw 46 members, family and friends enjoy a day tour arranged by our sponsor, Helloworld Alexander Heights store.

Leaving from the Club, the group’s first stop was House of Honey in the Swan Valley for meat and honey tasting. Then it was onto Stringybark Winery in the Chittering Valley for wine tasting and a roast lunch with dessert, before returning to the Club in the mid afternoon.

Everyone commented on the good value for the day, and a great idea to have regular day tours as members were looking for something to do on their days off from lawn bowls.

Helloworld Alexander Heights will be arranging more day tours to other places of interest, such as Perth Historical Tour, Avon Valley and York, and Star Gazing at Gingin Observatory.

If you are interested in being advised of future tours call sponsor Rod’s office on 93439000 Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm. Please support our sponsors when possible.

Men’s Second Division and Under Singles

The Men’s Second Division and Under Singles competition – a new event for Sorrento Bowling Club – was held on October 18th and 25th October, with the Final taking place on 27th October.

From a field of 24 entrants, numbers were whittled down by sectional play, quarter- and semi-finals, until we reached a 21-up final between Wayne Gray and Neville Odell (pictured).

This proved to be a tight game throughout. Neither player was able to get a significant break, with scores level at 12-12, 16-16 and 18-18. Ultimately, Wayne was able to gain three shots on the final end to give him the win.

Congratulations to you both!

Women’s Veteran Singles

The final of the Women’s Veteran Singles Championship was played on Wednesday 21st October between Lorraine Hyde and Jan Paniperis.

Lorraine was aiming for back to back titles, while for Jan it was her first final in this event.

On a perfect day for bowls, the game was long and low scoring; a close tussle with neither player able to get a break of more than three on the scoreboard. Lorraine then picked up a 3 on one end which brought her to a 20-14 lead. Jan never gave up, picking up a 1 and a 2 on the next two ends to bring it back to 20-17.

Lorraine managed to get her last shot needed on the following end, bringing to a close what had been an enthralling game for the supporters on the bank.

100 Up Championships

The finals of the Men’s and Women’s 100 Up Championships were both played on Sunday 11th October.

While the breeze did its best to redirect bowls later in the afternoon, there were some close games during the day.

The Men’s Final was between Murray Hulbert (who had defeated Stan Van Mosseveld in his semifinal) and Peter Flack (who had defeated Phil Webb). Murray got off to a great start but Peter quickly caught up. A couple of strong ends by Murray gave him a 10 point lead, eventually winning the final 100-90.

The Women’s final saw Pauline Bourne (who had defeated Lee Leach in a nail biting semifinal) against Liz Marshall (having defeated Pauline Marsden). Pauline adapted quickly to the changing breeze, picking up some high scoring ends quite early. While Liz settled to remain consistent in her scoring, the break was too much to bridge, Pauline winning the final 106-84.

Everest of Bowls 2020

Congratulations to Rhett Butler who bowled his way into the quarter finals of the Everest of Bowls 2020.

The major event, held at Dudley Park from 8-11 October, attracted 128 entrants from around the state and consisted of 16 sections of four on each of the first two days. The 32 winners of the sections then moved into Day 3, another day of drawn sectional play, with Rhett winning his section to move into the quarter finals for the fourth and final day.

After Shane Knott (pictured and the eventual Runner Up) got an early lead, Rhett fought his way back to eventually go down 16-21 in a great game.

Jackie Maxwell was one of the 11 women entrants in the event and also won her section on Day 1. Having to wait until Day 3 for her second section draw, she was up against Hailey Packer, Blake Nairn and last year’s winner Russell Bates, with Blake winning the section.

Everest Pre-Qualifier

Congratulations to Steve Mortimer (pictured right) who won the final of the Everest of Bowls 2020 Pre-Qualifier, defeating Greg Taylor 17-10.

Steve has now earned himself an entry in the Everest of Bowls 2020 to be played at Dudley Park from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th October. With a $12,000 first prize and a full field of 128 players from 40 clubs, we wish Steve and all the other Sorrento players the best of luck!

Men’s Veteran Singles

The Men’s Veteran Singles Championship final was held on Thursday 1st October between Bruce Eagles and Allan Davis.

Defending champion Bruce Eagles defeated Stan Van Mosseveld in his semi-final, while Allan Davis defeated Lindsay Baker.

In the final Bruce started strongly and surged to an 18-4 lead but Allan fought back to then trail 22-13.

However, the gap was too much to bridge and Bruce won the final 25-15.

Divorced Pairs

Our popular “Divorced Pairs”, proudly sponsored by Eyes On Optometrists, was held on Wednesday 30th September.

With a full field of 36 teams it was great to get a rain-free day for the event, especially after the wet and windy long weekend!

After a game in the morning, everyone relaxed over their BYO lunches, before heading back out onto the greens for a second game in the afternoon.

Congratulations to this year’s winners Peter Flack and Coral Smith (pictured) with 2 wins and 37 shots up.

Well done also to Runners Up Allan Davis and Jan Paniperis.

Spring Carnival

Sorrento Croquet Club were well represented at the Halls Head Doubles Spring Carnival over the September long weekend.

Terry and Jan Craddock, Cheryl Saul and Jenny Wilmot came equal thirds in their block on the Sunday, while Trish Klemp and Di McGivern came first in their block on the Monday.

Congratulations to all who competed! Pictured L-R: Di McGivern, Trish Klemp, Cheryl Saul, Jenny Wilmot, Jan Craddock, and Terry Craddock.

New Officials Course

Sorrento was recently host to the New Officials Course as part of the ‘officiating accreditation’ system introduced by Bowls WA in 2015.

18 participants from various clubs attended the three sessions over two days, covering areas of Marker, Measurer and National Umpire. The sessions included theory and practical on-green assessments and were both interesting and highly interactive.

Congratulations to Sorrento members Jan Siney, Helen Teasdale and Cheryl Greig (pictured with Gavan Ebsworth) for successfully completing the course and achieving their National Umpire’s accreditation.
