Our Ladies Singles was held on the 10th March with the men this year to encourage our working bowlers to play for the championship, and it worked, as we had 5 working ladies entering to make a total of 18 players in six sections, where two of our working ladies managed to reach the final 6. Congratulations Shona Buckley and Demi Konig.

We used our new A green, (which is running fantastic) and B Green, sharing with the men which worked out very well. All members were made aware that both men and women would be sharing A green to make it fair to all.

Finals were held the following week on the 17th March. Our final 6 players were Lee Leach and Kaye Martin, W Saul and Shonah Buckley, Demi Konig and Nerrida Porteous. This was a long day seeing Lee and Kaye going through to the semi finals and Wendy and Shonah playing a close game with Wendy winning 21 – 13. Nerrida and Demi also having a great game with Nerrida winning 21 – 11.

This saw Wendy and Nerrida play off for the semi final with Lee and Kaye. Wendy was the winner with 21 – 19 winning on the last end. Kaye also won on the last end with Lee on 20 to 20 to play in the finals with Wendy.

Wendy and Kaye were neck and neck but Kaye managed to again take the Women’s Singles championship for the second year in a row with another
very close game of 21 – 17.

We decided to have a Round Robin this year as there was only 6 teams competing and we thought this would be a much fairer competition, as every team will then play each other. It did however mean that we would have to play 5 games over two days.

Round 1 on the 21/2/24 started with yet another very warm and muggy day causing some of our ladies to become fatigued and Coral having to take time out. Match then made the decision to have lunch and a break so all ladies could hydrate ready to play only two games of 13 ends and the other three games of 13 ends to be held on the 28/2/24, with the hope that the weather will be a little kinder to us.

All round one games went down to the wire with our three winners being P. Boardman, K Hutchinson, N. Porteous and N. Atheneides, and S. Everest, S. Delevale, J. Cook, L Brickell and P Marsden, A Sauerwein, S Palmer R. Woodward. Round two saw P. Boardman’s team win again by 1 point, P. Bourne, L Leach, W Saul, Coral Smith and our third winner was M Dean, C. Greig, J. Power Tuke, J Page.

Round 2 28/2/24
We only managed to do two games last week so very pleased that the weather was a little better for us to complete the competition. We only had one change to day two with J Cook having to retire and Liz Marshall to take Jan’s position in Sandy Everest’s team.

Round 3 saw M Dean, C Greig, J Power Tuke, J Page, and P Bourne, L Leach, W Saul, C Smith and C Harris, S Carter, L Hughes, K Harris all winners

Round 4 saw P Boardman, K Hutchinson, N Porteous, N Atheneides and S Everest, S Delavale, L Brickell, L Marshall winning both rounds 4 and 5, and P Bourne, L Leach, W Saul and C Smith also winning both rounds 4 and 5.

We all played the 5 teams as a Round Robin and I think all Ladies actually enjoyed the competition. But it turned out to be far too much for many of our ladies playing 3 games in one day, especially as the weather in February is so hot. We will certainly be looking at other options next year.

The first round of the Women’s Triples for 2024 was held on the 31st January in very hot conditions. After looking at the weather forecast it was decided to do two rounds and then come for lunch and re -access whether to go out again or go home. This was taken out of our hands really as when we got to the club our board was a perfect 9 teams of 3 totalling 27 players BUT a phone call from Charmain Harris saying she has covid so will not be coming and Jan Power Tuke arriving sick so was sent home. Apologies to Claire Deeves who missed out in playing because of the numbers.

We now had 8 teams of 3 and therefore decided together with all the players to convert to knockout meaning that we would all play one game, and all the players decided to play 15 ends and not 13. Just as well because as expected the forecast was correct and by 12-30 we reached 38 for a short time so our last team had to come off and wait until the temperature went down, fortunately we got the sea breeze so we all finished our games. We had two of our teams not know until the last end who would win through to the next round so very close games.

Very well done to all our teams Carter v Everest 14-16, Brickell v Saul 10-21, Marsden v Bourne 8-20, Boardman v Hutchinson 9-11. 

Thank you to Robyn Rowe for bringing her Hydralyte tablets for our players which were greatly appreciated as of course some of our ladies were starting to feel a little worse for wear. It is so important for us all to drink and hydrate at all times.

Semi final and Final 7th February 2024

Unfortunately another hot day and we did reach 35 degrees when the finals were just about finished. the semi final with team Everest , Martin and Page playing Team Saul , Marshall and Cox. Team Saul won 19 to 12. The second Semi final saw Team Hutchinson, Sauerwein, and Hughes playing Team Bourne, Cook and Smith. Team Bourne won 16 to 8.

The final was therefore team Bourne our champions for the past two years to play Team Saul which was a really tight game and going down to the last couple of ends with a result of 13 to 11 to Wendy Saul, Liz Marshall and Dianne Cox defeating our current Champions Pauline Bourne, Jan Cook and Coral Smith.

Well done to all our ladies who took part in the Triples under extremely hot weather conditions. I think we really have to look at another time for this year, maybe later start or before pennants or after pennants .I would just like to thank our Bar Manager Matt for bringing out jugs of ice and lime water to keep our ladies hydrated during their game.

On Wednesday 6/12/23 this event was held with 20 players competing and enjoying a perfect morning for bowls. Because of the number of entries, it was decided to play round 1 as a straight knockout.

Those through after round 1 were: Lorraine Clarke and Jan Goddard with a comfortable win of +8. Jan Cook and Liz Marshall with +3, Larraine Brickell and Sue Delavale with a +12, Jennifer Page and Shirley Palmer with +17, Kath Harris and Charmain Harris with +7.

Round 2 commenced in the afternoon with a gusty afternoon sea breeze to contend with for our teams. Harris v Palmer – Team Harris lead the challenge with
Jennifer and Shirley working hard to match their am form. The score was 10/11 on the 13th end. Then the Harris team fort hard to win the final 2 ends resulting in a score of 14/10 to the last years champions.

Team Delavale v Goddard – This game was dominated by team Delavale who were off to a good start and were enjoying one of those when they could not do much wrong with a rewarding result of 21/8.

Friday 5/1/24 Semi Final and Finals round 1 saw Jan Cook and Liz Marshall v Kath Harris and Charmain Harris. What a great game ending with the 17th end having both teams on 11 points each, so it was whoever won end 18. Charmain decided not to play her last bowl as she throught her bowl was the winner, However, after both Jan and Charmain did several measurements, they decided to play another end which resulted in the Harris Team winning with a 13/11 score. This Semi Final was played with great sportsmanship by both teams to come to this conclusion.

The Final was played after a quick lunch break with Sue Delavale and Larraine Brickell v Kath Harris and Charmain Harris. The score was 6 points each on the 8th end but the Harris team managed to pick up two 5 points , one on the 9th end and again on the 12th end. Sue and Larraine put in a great fight but the Harris team went away with a 22/9 win to once again walk away with the Pairs trophy and putting them as 2024 Women's pairs champions yet again this year. 2 in a row
Well done Ladies!!!

Day 1 commenced on Sunday 30/11 with 8 teams competing. Only one game was played because of the hot conditions with a maximum of 39oC predicted – resulting in 4 teams going through.

Day 2 Played on Sunday 3/12 Semi Finals between Teams Orton (Nerida Porteous, Ross Porteous, Lee Leach and Skip Trevor Orton) V Team Cunningham (Liz Marshall, Shirley Palmer, Roger Palmer and Skip Ross Cunningham). Team Cunningham got off to a flying start winning 8 of the first 11 ends and played consistently well with a final score of 28/9.

Team Konig ( Nikki Athiendides, Adrian Rose, Coral Smith, Jan Konig) V Team Greig (Jodi Neindorf, Leslie Hughes, Jeff Thompson, Dan Greig). This was another great game with a final score of 29/7 allowing Team Konig a place in the finals.

After a well deserved lunch break the final was played in ideal conditions with a gentle breeze blowing to make it a pleasant afternoon for both spectators and bowlers. Team Cunningham got away with a flying start and won the first 9 ends when team Konig came back to make both teams play to their best ability with beautiful draw shots played by both teams. Final result 26/16 to Team Cunningham. The game was played in a very competitive manner with great bowls played by both teams. This was due to the direction and encouragement from both skippers – well done.

Congratulations to the Winners Team Cunningham and Runner’s Up Team Konig.

Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, Trish Cunningham was unable to play and was replaced by Liz Marshall.
